Instrumentation & Controls Engineer Intern - Oil & Gas (Summer 2027)

About the role

This internship, with a target start date of Summer 2027, will place you on a project team within our Energy & Industrial Group business unit. You will assist the Oil & Gas engineering team in executing projects that may involve the design of new systems or modifications and upgrades to oil & gas upstream production, gas transmission and distribution, renewable energy, and/or carbon-capture engineering projects.

Under the direction of senior engineers, you will have the opportunity to apply and expand your academic background in Mechanical and/or Electrical Engineering in one or more of the following areas:

• Assist in the preparation of engineering calculations, specifications, and designs.
• Work on project reporting tasks, such as tracking and evaluating project activities, progress, and associated data.
• Contribute to system designs and prepare specifications for the procurement of major industrial energy equipment and related installation services.

Requirements

• Expected graduation date in Winter 2027 or Spring 2028 with a Bachelor or Master of Science degree in Mechanical and/or Electrical Engineering.
• Strong organizational skills with high attention to detail.
• Self-starter, proactive, and able to work independently with minimal direction.
• Ability to quickly identify and prioritize issues, create solutions, and meet deadlines.
• We do not sponsor employees for work authorization in the U.S. for this position.

Valued Skills and Experience

• A Bachelor’s or Master’s of Science degree from an ABET Engineering Accreditation Commission-approved program.
• Demonstrated leadership experience within campus and/or the community.
• Minimum of a 3.0 GPA strongly preferred.
• Prior, related internship or co-op experience.

AI & Automation

In this role, you are expected to solve problems using modern tools such as automation and AI to improve workflows, reduce rework, and deliver cost-effective designs. Many engineers in these roles build or use automation to create calculations, summarize technical documents, or draft design documentation, including appropriate use of agentic AI tools, with strong engineering judgment and verification of results.

• Programming or scripting (e.g., Python, MATLAB, advanced Excel) to automate calculations, design checks, reporting, or data transformation is valued but not required.
• Additional learning, such as a minor, certificate, or other training in Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence, Software Engineering, or related fields, is valued if it helps apply automation or agentic AI to real engineering problems.

Pay

Compensation range: $18.00 - $30.00 per hour. The total compensation package for eligible positions includes a base salary or hourly rate, a comprehensive benefits package, and potential eligibility for a yearly discretionary bonus.
