Instructor - School of Music

About the Role

The School of Music at the University of Kansas invites qualified scholars and professionals to apply for Instructor positions. These are instructional, adjunct faculty roles that are not eligible for tenure or promotion. Positions may be part-time, full-time, regular, or temporary, and are filled as needed. This specific appointment is for the Fall 2026 and/or Spring 2027 semesters, with renewal based on unit needs, funding, and performance, not to exceed two continuous semesters.

This position is subject to a collective bargaining agreement. As Kansas is a right-to-work state, union membership is optional. Due to state employment laws, the university may be unable to hire fully remote workers outside of Kansas, specifically excluding candidates residing in California, Delaware, Idaho, and Minnesota. The successful candidate must have appropriate U.S. work authorization before employment begins.

Responsibilities

• Teach courses in a specific field of music.
• Develop course materials, syllabi, lectures, and assignments.
• Grade student work and provide feedback.
• Advise students and hold regular office hours.
• Collaborate with colleagues and stay current in the field.
• Adhere to departmental, school/college, and university policies and procedures.

Requirements

For Instruction of Undergraduate-Level Courses:

• Master’s degree in music or a closely related discipline, OR
• Bachelor’s degree in music or a closely related field AND five or more years of applied, relevant experience, OR
• Bachelor’s degree in any field AND ten or more years of applied, relevant experience.
• Record of research, scholarship, or achievement in the discipline.

For Instruction of Graduate-Level Courses:

• Earned terminal degree (Ph.D., D.M.A., or equivalent) in music or a closely related discipline, OR
• Master’s degree in any discipline AND seven years of relevant professional experience in music.
• Record of research, scholarship, or achievement in the discipline.

Years of professional music experience may suffice for academic degree requirements and will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis. A formal degree in the discipline is required to ensure foundational knowledge and skills.
