Instructor, Human Services Technology - Adjunct

Provide the expertise and knowledge that support the college curriculum and programs. Establish courses following accepted higher education standards, teach students using a variety of effective methodologies, and provide engagement and support activities that encourage student learning. The role encompasses teaching and learning, academic advising, professional development, and institutional and community service.

Responsibilities

• Teach a maximum load of contact hours each semester in human services, chemical dependency, and general clinical counseling.
• Demonstrate skill and knowledge in teaching discipline; continuously improve instruction quality through innovative methodologies and delivery methods.
• Develop and use a syllabus for each course within college, discipline, and departmental guidelines; submit a copy to the department chair.
• Plan, develop, and use a variety of teaching methods and materials to assist students with differing educational and experiential backgrounds.
• Evaluate students to measure progress toward course objectives and inform them of their progress in a timely manner.
• Keep accurate student records and submit related reports within requested timelines.
• Review, evaluate, and recommend student textbooks and learning materials.
• Teach courses at various times and locations in response to institutional needs.
• Maintain professional relationships with students, colleagues, and the community; provide access through office hours and electronic communication.
• Advise and assist students regarding instructional or program-specific issues, including transfer opportunities, careers, clubs, and support services.
• Create and maintain a website with academic and program information.
• Participate in academic advising activities as needed by the College and Department.
• Establish annual objectives for professional growth in consultation with the department chair; keep pace with developments in the discipline.
• Learn and apply technologies that support student learning; participate in evaluation processes for self, department, and college.
• Participate in scheduled institutional service activities, including opening week events, conference days, and commencement exercises.
• Actively engage in department, college, or system meetings and committees; adhere to all HCCS policies and procedures.
• Participate in college-related activities such as student activities, faculty selection, community education, and recruitment.
• Engage in business, student, or community activities that foster goodwill and promote the mission of HCCS.
• Maintain program and college accreditation standards; assist in the formulation of departmental objectives, goals, and budget priorities.
• Review, evaluate, and revise program curricula to ensure compliance with professional standards, state guidelines, and industry requirements.
• Assist in the articulation of courses and programs with secondary and post-secondary institutions.

Requirements

• Master’s degree in Human Services or Behavioral Sciences (a photocopy of the transcript showing degree conferred must accompany the application).
• Minimum of three (3) years of experience in the field of human services or a related area.
• Industry certifications/licenses preferred; incumbent must maintain certifications/licenses.

Skills

• Wide range of clinical skills, including basic counseling, group counseling, assessment, counseling theories, family systems, and substance abuse.
• Knowledge of Motivational Interviewing is a plus.
• Basic computer skills and knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite.
• Ability to work in a diverse work environment and teach day or evening classes at multiple sites.
• Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to communicate effectively with diverse populations.
• Strong organizational and planning skills.
• Sensitivity to students with diverse academic, socio-economic, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds, as well as students with disabilities.
• Ability to inspire and motivate students in a learning-centered environment.
• Self-disciplined and able to effectively manage others.
