About the Role
This position provides support to the instructional program within assigned elementary classrooms, with specific responsibility for assisting in the supervision, care, and instruction of special needs students in the resource classroom. The role involves implementing instructional plans, monitoring student behavior, and providing clerical support to teachers and staff.
Responsibilities
- Adapts classroom activities, assignments, and materials under the direction of the supervising teacher to support and reinforce classroom objectives and IEP goals.
- Administers immediate first aid and medical assistance as instructed by a health care professional (e.g., medication, tube feeding, colostomy bags).
- Administers tests, homework, and make-up work to support teachers in the classroom.
- Assists in data collection under the direction of the assigned teacher to monitor student progress.
- Assists students with self-care activities (e.g., toileting, washing, changing diapers, eating, dressing, grooming).
- Assists students, individually or in groups, with lesson assignments (e.g., reading stories, listening to students read, providing writing assistance, reinforcing English lessons, facilitating activities, computer learning programs).
- Attends job-specific trainings and meetings (e.g., first aid, behavior management) to acquire and convey information relative to job functions.
- Communicates with supervising instructional staff and professional support personnel to assist in evaluating progress and implementing IEP and/or 504 objectives.
- Demonstrates appropriate role modeling (e.g., conversation, manners, emotional support, listening skills, friendly and engaging attitudes) to guide students in developing social and interpersonal behavior.
- Implements, under the supervision of the assigned teacher, behavioral plans identified in student IEPs.
- Maintains instructional materials, manual and electronic files/records, and classroom equipment to ensure availability and meet mandated requirements.
- Monitors students in various school environments (e.g., restrooms, playgrounds, hallways, bus loading zones, cafeteria, parking lots) to maintain a safe and positive learning environment.
- Performs clerical duties (e.g., screening phone calls, distributing materials, maintaining inventories, processing documents) to ensure efficient operations.
- Provides instruction to students in individual and group activities (e.g., academic subjects, social skills, daily living skills) to reinforce instructional objectives and implement IEP/504 plans.
- Reports observations and incidents relating to specific students (e.g., accidents, fights, inappropriate social behavior, violations of rules, safety conditions).
- Supervises and escorts students to/from classes to provide a safe and optimal learning environment.
Requirements
- Age 16 or older.
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Must complete mandatory employee training within the first 3 months of employment.
Pay
Hourly rate: Untrained (Lane 5) - $15.69. Employees may complete an in-district training to qualify for Lane 6 at $16.70.
Schedule
3.25 hours per day.
