Instructional Paraprofessional/ Literacy - Elementary

Hourly rate: Untrained – Lane 5 $15.61; Trained – Lane 6 $16.62 (employee may complete an in-district training to qualify for Lane 6). Daily schedule: 5.8 hours.

About the role

The Instructional Paraprofessional provides literacy support within assigned elementary classrooms, assisting in the supervision, care, and instruction of special-needs students in the resource setting. The role includes implementing instructional plans, monitoring behavior, and offering clerical support to teachers and staff.

Responsibilities

• Adapts classroom activities, assignments, and materials under the direction of the supervising teacher to support and reinforce classroom objectives and IEP goals.
• Administers immediate first aid and medical assistance as instructed by a health-care professional (e.g., medication, tube feeding, colostomy bags).
• Administers tests, homework, and make-up work to support teachers in the classroom.
• Assists in data collection under the direction of the assigned teacher to monitor student progress.
• Assists students with self-care activities (e.g., toileting, washing, changing diapers, eating, dressing, grooming).
• Assists students individually or in groups with lesson assignments (e.g., reading stories, listening to students read, writing assistance, reinforcing English lessons, spelling practice, computer learning programs).
• Attends job-specific trainings and meetings (e.g., first aid, behavior management) to acquire and convey information relative to job functions.
• Communicates with supervising instructional staff and professional support personnel to assist in evaluating progress and implementing IEP and/or 504 objectives.
• Demonstrates appropriate role modeling (e.g., conversation, manners, emotional support, listening skills, friendly and engaging attitudes) to guide students in developing social and interpersonal behavior.
• Implements, under the supervision of the assigned teacher, behavioral plans identified in student IEPs.
• Maintains instructional materials, manual and electronic files, records, and classroom equipment to ensure availability and compliance with mandated requirements.
• Monitors students in various school environments (e.g., restrooms, playgrounds, hallways, bus loading zones, cafeteria, parking lots) to maintain a safe and positive learning environment.
• Performs clerical duties (e.g., screening phone calls, distributing materials, maintaining inventories, processing documents) to ensure efficient operations.
• Provides instruction to students in individual and group activities (e.g., academic subjects, social skills, daily living skills) under the supervision of the assigned teacher to reinforce instructional objectives and implement IEP/504 plans.
• Reports observations and incidents relating to specific students (e.g., accidents, fights, inappropriate social behavior, rule violations, safety conditions) to appropriate personnel.
• Supervises and escorts students to and from classes to provide a safe and optimal learning environment.

Requirements

• Age 16 or older.
• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Must complete mandatory employee training within the first three months of employment.
