Instructional Behavior Assistant 2026-2027

Reports to: Director of Special Education, Building Principal, or Assistant Special Education Director. FLSA Status: Non-Exempt. Work calendar: 185 days, 8 hours/day, 40 hours/week.

About the Role

Behavior Intervention Assistant (IA) with experience working with individuals with disabilities such as Autism, implementing skill acquisition programs, and function-based behavior support plans. Proficiency in ABA methodologies and teaching techniques, along with excellent communication, organization, and time management skills, is required.

Responsibilities

• Apply knowledge of applied behavior analysis and appropriate interventions for students with Autism Spectrum Disorder.
• Understand child development and curriculum/instructional materials to assist students in accessing their learning environment.
• Assess student needs and provide interventions to redirect behavior.
• Review and implement multiple Behavior Intervention Plans (BIPs) simultaneously, monitoring progress regularly.
• Provide individualized educational services to students aged 3–22 with Autism Spectrum Disorders and other disabilities across various environments, including general and special education classrooms.
• Facilitate independent work and transitions as outlined in the student's IEP.
• Provide escort and assistance throughout the school and community settings.
• Implement acquisition and behavior programs, accepting and applying feedback from teachers, therapists, and administrators.
• Collaborate with building administrators on evaluations as needed.
• Implement data collection systems, including data graphing, progress monitoring, and support for Functional Behavior Assessments.
• Maintain consistency of Behavioral Intervention Plans by communicating with teachers and support staff.
• Work collaboratively with specialists (Teachers of Record, OT, PT, SLP) to develop and implement appropriate programming based on individual needs.
• Assist with inclusion practices and implement transition programs to the Least Restrictive Environment.
• Model implementation of Behavior Intervention Plans for paraprofessionals and staff.
• Adhere to high standards of professional behavior, using appropriate ABA teaching, communication, and reinforcement techniques.
• Maintain student confidentiality, dignity, and choice in all interactions.
• Keep student and program records in compliance with timelines, standards, regulations, and district policies.
• Complete crisis management and de-escalation trainings; participate as a member of the school crisis team.
• Support students in various locations, including different buildings, school buses, or ABA centers for transition.
• Perform additional duties as assigned by Special Education Administration, building principal, or designee.

Requirements

• High school diploma or equivalent; Bachelor’s degree preferred.
• Experience using ABA methodologies, preferably in a public school setting, with students on the Autism spectrum or with severe behavioral needs.
• Maintain district program certifications, such as crisis management/de-escalation programs.

Physical Demands

• Regularly required to use hands, talk, hear, stand, walk, sit, reach, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.
• Occasionally lift and/or move up to 15 pounds.
• Specific vision abilities required: close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
• May assist physically with lifting students for personal care and hygiene needs.

Working Conditions

• Occasionally exposed to outside weather conditions.
• Moderate noise level in the work environment.

Pay

$20.39/hour.
