About the Role
Provide the highest quality care and supervision to students in the Broward County School System by offering classroom supports that enhance the instructional process. Play a vital role in the individualized program of education.
Responsibilities
- Work under the direct supervision of a teacher to create instructional materials.
- Supervise and escort students throughout the school to ensure safety and welfare.
- Provide classroom-related clerical support, such as daily notes, student folders, and data collection.
- Prepare and use instructional materials and teaching aids under the teacher’s direction.
- Engage in general housekeeping activities to maintain a safe and obstruction-free classroom.
- Assist with lunchroom activities and dine with students as needed.
- Supervise nap and rest periods as required.
- Provide care for children when the teacher is absent for up to 30 minutes (not including substitute teaching).
- Construct and design specific items for tests and worksheets based on teacher-provided guidelines.
- Follow up on lessons presented by the teacher using provided guidelines.
- Supervise small group discussions and activities among students.
- Assist individual students as assigned by the teacher.
- Utilize programs with groups of students.
- Perform daily living activities, which may include:
- Assisting with personal hygiene and restroom functions, including diapering or catheterization.
- Providing mobility assistance, such as lifting, positioning, or transferring students.
- Assisting with feeding needs.
- Supporting adaptive equipment needs.
- Providing behavioral assistance, including implementing PBIP and positive crisis management (PCM) skills.
- Participate in training programs to enhance skills and proficiency related to job responsibilities.
- Review current developments, literature, and technical sources related to job responsibilities.
- Ensure adherence to safety rules and procedures, as well as federal, state, and School Board policies.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the immediate supervisor or designee.
Requirements
- A standard high school diploma or satisfactory completion of an approved General Education Development (GED) testing program.
- Ability to interact and communicate effectively with children.
- Computer skills as required for the position.
Preferred Qualifications
- Successful completion of the Principles of Teaching (formerly known as Teacher Assisting Curriculum) at a designated technical college in the Broward County School District.
- Achieving a passing score on the ParaPro Test or other officially sanctioned standard tests to demonstrate the ability to assist in instructing reading/language arts, writing, and mathematics (or readiness in these areas, as appropriate).
- An earned associate degree from an accredited institution, or at least 60 semester hours of earned college credit from an accredited institution.
- Bilingual skills.
Physical Requirements
Medium work: Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force as frequently as needed to move objects.
Pay
Hourly rate: $16.89 per hour (new hires start at the minimum of the assigned salary range).
