Instructional Assistant/Para Educator at Keller Elementary

About the role

Instructional Assistant is a 183‑day working calendar position; Para Educator is a 180‑day working calendar position. Hours per day: 4.55 (3.05 IA hours; 1.5 Para educator hours). Shift: 10:00 am – 3:03 pm. Location: Helen Keller Elementary (Lake Washington Learning Community). During the peak hiring months of August and September, vacancies are posted to internal and external candidates; the internal posting closes on 9/21/26. Employees must have been in their current position for at least six months to be eligible for transfer, as outlined in the SEIU Collective Bargaining Agreement Section 15.9.

Responsibilities

• Instructional Assistant: Assists teaching staff by completing instructional tasks and maintaining an orderly classroom to provide a positive learning environment; may be assigned to classroom, lunchroom, library, before or after school academic programs, or office; at elementary level includes crossing guard and playground duties; may work with an individual student or the entire classroom.
• Para Educator: Assists teachers with individualized and small group instruction for students with physical, behavioral, or medical needs; supports special health care needs and develops daily living and behavioral skills; assists with classroom preparation, equipment and supplies; may supervise and assist students in library, classrooms, resource rooms, self‑contained classroom, playgrounds, or getting on and off a bus.

Requirements

Must hold an Associate degree (AA) or higher OR have completed two years of study equivalent to 72 college quarter credit hours OR have passed an Educational Testing Service ParaPro Assessment with a score of 455 or higher OR have passed the Pearson Paraprofessional Assessment with a score of 220 or higher. Official documentation will be required upon hire. Must pass criminal background check.

Qualifications

Instructional Assistant position is eligible for membership in the Service Employees International Union No. 925. Para Educator position is eligible for membership in the Teamsters Local Union No. 763, part of the Lake Washington School District Trades Bargaining Council No. 763.

Pay

Instructional Assistant: $27.71 per hour. Para Educator: $30.79 per hour.

Instructional Assistant works a 183‑day calendar; Para Educator works a 180‑day calendar. Daily schedule: 4.55 hours per day (3.05 IA hours + 1.5 Para educator hours) from 10:00 am to 3:03 pm.
