SALARY

All new hires will be placed at the starting salary step of this classification ($25.66).
Employees are eligible for a step increase on their anniversary date each year, up to the maximum step 5 of this salary range ($29.76).

Job Summary

This eligibility list will be used to fill substitute and regular assignments (substitute salary is $22.39 per hour).
Persons in these positions work 3.5 hours per day, Monday through Friday, during the school session.
Full-time assignments (6 hours per day) are typically filled by current IA II’s in part-time assignments.
Under the general supervision of a certificated teacher or administrator, assists students with mild, moderate, or severe disabilities in meeting their Individualized Education Program (IEP) goals and objectives;
and performs related work as required.

Essential Duties

  • Assists teachers in assigned features of the Individual Education Program (IEP) for students with a wide range of disabilities.
  • Affords assistance in preparing classroom and materials for use by students including assistive technology and other technology used in the classroom.
  • Reads to students and organizes indoor games.
  • Affords instructional support as directed by teacher to individuals or small groups.
  • Affords assistance in providing transportation to students on field trips and to community-based activities.
  • Affords assistance with washing, toileting, and other personal care activities.
  • Monitors and logs student medical information, as appropriate.
  • Serves meals to students as part of the instructional program.
  • Serves as a supervisor for playground activities.
  • Affords assistance in maintaining a clean and safe learning environment.
  • Might work with students who exhibit behaviors such as verbal outbursts, hitting, throwing, running, pushing, and kicking.
  • Might utilize approved district restraint training to assist with restraining students as appropriate.
  • Discusses students' behavior and progress with supervising certificated staff and professional support personnel.
  • Affords assistance in gathering data on student progress and/or implementing IEP objectives.

Employment Standards

  • Education and Experience: High school diploma and some experience in working with young people are required.
    An associate's degree and some experience working with students or other individuals with disabilities are highly desirable.
  • Certification: Employees in some positions may be required to obtain a valid First Aid Certificate, including CPR training.

Knowledge & Abilities

  • Correct English usage, including spelling, grammar, and punctuation.
  • Basic mathematics.
  • Requirements for the physical care of students with disabilities.
  • Brief teaching techniques and methods.
  • Oral and written communication skills.
  • Interpersonal skills using tact, patience, and courtesy.
  • Appropriate hygiene standards.
  • Health and safety regulations as related to the position.

Selection Procedures

  • Applications will be accepted from the general public and district employees who possess the above qualifications.
  • The district reserves the right to invite applicants whose qualifications most closely meet the requirements needed for the position to continue in the examination process.
  • The examination may consist of an evaluation of training and experience, multiple choice, performance, and oral/technical exams.

Outside and District Candidates

  • Outside and district candidates will be placed on one ranked list, with eligible permanent district employees receiving five seniority points which will be added to their final scores.

Veteran's Credit

  • Veterans shall have an additional five (5) points added to their final percentage score on an open eligibility list as prescribed by Education Code, Section 45296.
  • Disabled veterans shall have an additional ten (10) points added to their final percentage score on an open eligibility list as prescribed by Education Code, Section 45296.

Hiring Procedures

  • Garden Grove is a merit system (civil service) school district. Employment and promotions are based upon merit, fitness and qualifications.
  • The person selected to fill any regular position will be from among the top three ranks on the eligibility list approved by the Personnel Commission.
  • All regular employees will serve a six (6) month probation.

Examination for Tuberculosis

  • Proof of freedom from active tuberculosis must be furnished prior to employment and must be based upon an intradermal Mantoux tuberculin skin test completed within the last 60 days.

Fingerprinting

  • All new employees will be fingerprinted.
