Schedule

Monday through Friday, 6.95 total hours per day (6.45 hours paid, including a 30-minute unpaid break).

  • Instructional: 3.75 hours
  • Supervisory: 2.70 hours

Pay

  • Instructional: $28.05/hour
  • Supervisory: $23.73/hour

Per the paraeducator labor agreement.

Qualifications

A high school diploma or GED and one of the following:

  • An AA, AS, AAS (or higher) degree, or
  • Two years of post-secondary coursework (60 semester credits or 90 quarter credits) from an accredited institution of higher education which are applicable toward a bachelor’s degree, or

  • Must possess and display excellent human relations skills when dealing with staff, students, and community.
  • Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations.
  • Ability to get along with other people and have patience in dealing with parents and students.
  • Ability to provide excellent customer service to students, staff, and parents.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and concisely both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to communicate with students, staff, and community.
  • Ability to read and comprehend instructions, correspondence, and memos.
  • Ability to write correspondence.
  • Ability to perform basic mathematical computations and interpret data related to student performance.
  • Ability to operate a computer and knowledge of multiple software packages.
  • Ability to perform duties with awareness of all district requirements and Board of Education policies.

Responsibilities

Instructional Responsibilities

  • Under the direction of a certified teacher, provides assistance both to teachers and students in implementing lesson plans.
  • May work closely on an individual basis with students requiring close supervision and special assistance; provides support, explanation, re-teaching, and discipline.
  • Guides and works through lesson plans and projects with individual students or small groups by assisting with assignments, correcting tasks, assessing comprehension level, and recording results as established by the teacher.
  • Conducts tests and informal quizzes to assess students' mastery of learned materials or appropriate program placement; assists the teacher in assessing and tracking student progress.
  • Explains and interprets class assignments; instructs students in the use of learning materials, computers, equipment, and texts.
  • Supervises vocational education students in performing tasks in office, classroom, and other sites in the building, including instruction and discipline as needed.
  • Monitors and evaluates behaviors of students at risk; discusses expectations of appropriate behavior with students based on school and district policy and individual needs of students; helps determine and carry out consequences.
  • Recommends ideas, identifies problems, or participates in problem-solving discussions at meetings.
  • Assists students in reading books, records results, and administers rewards; helps students get to class and assists students during meals.
  • Chaperones students during activities away from school.
  • Locates, advises, or otherwise assists students in securing materials, books, reference materials, or other information needed for class assignments.
  • Performs clerical functions: maintains office, grades, and attendance records; files student papers; updates cumulative folders; copies items needed by staff for meetings and presentations; types instructional sheets; and updates computer records.
  • Maintains classroom or facility cleanliness by putting away equipment, cleaning desks, and other areas to maintain an orderly facility.
  • Other duties as necessary or assigned.

Supervisory Responsibilities

  • Provides assistance to the administration and teachers in the general supervision of students; assists in maintaining discipline on-site and while on field trips; communicates with bus drivers, community members, students, staff, and parents.
  • Supervises students on the playground, in hallways, lunchroom, bus areas (ensuring students have transportation home), restrooms, locker rooms, or parking lot area by moving throughout the supervision area, assisting students (including on and off equipment), assisting injured students, monitoring and responding appropriately to student misbehavior.
  • In extreme cases, may be required to restrain students consistent with individual student plans and district policy.
  • Monitors behavior of students for appropriateness; initiates appropriate consequences for student misbehavior according to individual learning plans and building discipline plan; evaluates the need for further discipline; confers with administration, teachers, counselors, or parents regarding behavior problems and discipline.
  • Provides information to parents, drivers, and community members as necessary during supervision or as a result of disciplinary issues.
  • Assists students who need special assistance, such as using elevators.
  • Assists classroom teachers in supervision of class and correcting papers; assists with setup and takedown of classroom materials for instructional units; may escort children around the building; provides supervision on field trips.
  • In early childhood programs, may diaper and feed students, read stories, play with students, wash toys and paintbrushes, and straighten up the room.
  • Refers clean-up, repair, or general maintenance problems to custodial staff.
  • Assists administration in conducting fire drills by ensuring that students and teachers follow established rules for exit, regrouping, and re-entry to the building.
  • Provides general clerical functions such as answering phones, greeting and assisting visitors, operating office machines, opening and distributing mail, and filing.
