Instructional Aide

IOTA Community Schools is a network of four public charter schools in Memphis, Tennessee. We operate both "fresh start" schools and "zoned-enrollment" turnaround schools. From 6th through 12th grades, our schools serve predominantly minority and low-income populations likely to be first-generation college attendees.

About the role

The instructional aide provides support for students to enable access to curriculum and academic instruction throughout the school day. The role may work primarily with special education students in a variety of settings including in a self-contained classroom, as a one-to-one support, or as needed by the school and students. Additionally, an instructional aide may serve in the in-school suspension room, providing support to students who need a behavioral reset as they access the curriculum.

Responsibilities

• Discuss classroom learning activities with teacher/specialist to coordinate instructional efforts and implement instructional programs
• Provide assistance to students as required via IEP, 504, behavior plan, or wrap-around team
• Review and follow behavioral plans, document progress or deficits in meeting goals
• Support students by attending classes with them, providing toiletry support if needed, implementing accommodations as determined by their wrap-around team, and applying behavioral interventions
• Operate office machines and instructional equipment such as copy machines, computers, laminators, and telephones
• Perform classroom-associated clerical work: typing, sorting, filing, keeping accurate records, setting up and maintaining file folders, recording attendance, completing forms, measuring, cutting, and copying
• Prepare teaching aids and materials such as charts, graphs, and related items using methods like typing, copying, collating, stapling, and laminating
• Support students in the in-school suspension room by helping them complete assignments and engaging in socio-emotional conversations and practices designed to restore the environment
• Call parents to arrange appointments or provide approved information about school or student
• Tutor students in various subject matters, working with students with and without disabilities
• Support students in curriculum across high school content
• Use de-escalation strategies with students in need of a reset opportunity
• Provide a reset space for students
• Motivate and encourage positive learning patterns and behavior for students with disabilities and special learning needs
• Keep accurate records
• Demonstrate understanding, patience, confidence, tact, and sound judgment toward students with disabilities
• Adapt to changing circumstances and priorities within the learning environment
• Work collaboratively as an educational team member
• Perform other duties as assigned

Requirements

• Possess a high school diploma (or equivalent) and one of the following:
  • Completion of at least two years of college (48 units)
  • Attainment of an AA (or higher) degree
• IOTA strongly prefers candidates who have one or more of the following:
  • Six months experience working with middle school-aged or high school-aged adolescents/children in a structured environment
  • Any other combination of training and experience that could provide the desired skills, knowledge, or abilities
• Must be able to:
  • Remain in a stationary position for periods of time and accompany students (as needed) from classroom to classroom
  • Move throughout a school building, including climbing stairs, entering/exiting classrooms/building, and supporting students on/off the bus
  • Operate a computer and other office machinery such as calculators, copy machines, and printers
  • Communicate, detect, converse with, discern, and exchange information with the wrap-around team
  • Transport or lift students as needed
  • Use hands to handle, control, or feel objects, tools, or controls
  • See details of objects both near and far
  • Determine the distance between objects
  • React quickly using hands, fingers, or feet
  • Adjust body movements or equipment controls to keep pace with speed changes
  • Hear sounds and recognize the difference between them

Pay

The wage for this position will be $17-$19 per hour. Please note that candidates who are new to their role or newly promoted can expect offers between the minimum and the mid-point of the range. Offers at the top of the range are rare. Individual education and experience will be considered when issuing offers.
