About the role

This eligibility list will primarily be used to fill part-time instructional aide vacancies in elementary school classrooms. Positions typically involve working 3 to 3.5 hours per day, Monday through Friday, during the school session. The list may also be used to fill substitute assignments, which are on-call as work becomes available.

Under the general supervision of a certificated teacher or administrator, instructional aides support student instruction individually or in small groups at the elementary or secondary school level. Assignments may include classrooms, reading labs, or special study centers.

Responsibilities

  • Support student instruction and assessment by working with students individually or in small groups, as directed by the teacher.
  • Implement and modify curriculum, such as learning materials and activities, under the teacher’s direction.
  • Use positive reinforcement strategies and other techniques to assist students in developing appropriate behavior.
  • Follow teacher’s lesson plans to reinforce lessons presented by the teacher.
  • Implement alternative methods for presenting instruction to students, as directed by the teacher.
  • Confer with the teacher regarding programs and materials to meet student needs.
  • Provide feedback to the teacher on students' progress.
  • Assist the teacher in scoring tests, recording grades, and charting student progress.
  • Help set up experiments, displays, and exhibits; operate audiovisual and other educational training equipment; and distribute and collect educational materials, papers, and supplies.
  • Implement standards set by the teacher for appropriate student behaviors to ensure effective participation in activities and a safe, optimal learning environment.
  • Monitor student progress and behavior in the classroom, lunchroom, playground, and during special educational activities.
  • May duplicate educational materials within categorical funding guidelines.
  • May accompany students on field trips.
  • Operate classroom equipment, including audio/visual devices and various forms of classroom technology.
  • Attend trainings and meetings to convey and gather information required for job functions and stay updated on best practices.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • High school diploma and some experience working with young people are required.
  • An associate’s degree is highly desirable.
  • Candidates must meet the federal Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) requirement for this position by possessing an associate’s degree or higher, or by having completed at least 48 full semester units. College transcripts or a degree must be attached to the application if applicable.
  • Positions assigned to a preschool classroom may require additional immunizations.

  • Basic methods used in instruction.

  • Assist a certificated teacher or administrator in instructing students in reading, writing, and mathematics.

  • Communicate effectively in English, both orally and in writing.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, parents, teachers, and administrators.
  • Implement learning activities for students.
  • Adapt basic teaching techniques and methods to support the teacher.
  • Maintain a healthy and safe environment.
  • Understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Monitor and assist students.
  • Demonstrate an understanding, patient, warm, and receptive attitude toward students.
  • Maintain confidentiality of sensitive and privileged information.

Pay

Starting salary for this classification is $23.24 per hour. Employees are eligible for a step increase on their anniversary date each year, up to the maximum step of $26.96 per hour.

Schedule

Part-time positions typically involve working 3 to 3.5 hours per day, Monday through Friday, during the school session. Substitute assignments are on-call as work becomes available.
