Duties and Responsibilities Tutor individual or small groups of students, reinforcing instruction as directed by the teacher, monitor and supervise student drills and assignments; assist students with reading, writing, math, computer skills and other subject areas as assigned by the position. Administer, monitor and score a variety of tests; rephrase materials and explain instructions as needed. Prepare instructional materials in accordance with grade level, lesson plans and appropriate reading collection; work with students in handwriting, phonics, letter recognition, and other activities. Observe and control behavior of students according to approved procedures, report progress regarding student performance and behavior. Perform a variety of clerical duties such as preparing, typing and duplicating instructional materials, scoring papers and recording grades; prepare and maintain student records and cum files as necessary. Provide support to the teacher by preparing for daily activities, setting up work areas, displays and exhibits, and distributing and collecting paper, supplies and materials; assist with gathering materials for projects and preparing handouts, folders and classroom worksheets. Assure the health and safety of students by following health and safety practices and procedures. Direct group activities of students as assigned including standards-aligned PE at recess; assist in monitoring lunchroom and playground activities as assigned; accompany students on field trips as assigned. Operate a computer and other office equipment as assigned; operate instructional and audio-visual equipment as assigned. Participate in in-service training programs as assigned. Perform related duties as assigned. Qualifications High school diploma and passage of NCLB Paraprofessional Test as administered by the District or hold an AA degree.. Knowledge of correct English usage, grammar, spelling, punctuation and vocabulary. Knowledge of child guidance principals and practices, and basic subjects taught in District schools, including math, grammar, spelling, language and reading. Knowledge of safe practices in classroom and playground activities. Excellent interpersonal skills using tact, patience and courtesy. Excellent oral and written communication skills, to include effective communication with staff and students. Ability to read, interpret, apply and explain rules, regulations, policies and procedures. Comprehensive knowledge of classroom procedures, appropriate student conduct and classroom diagnostic procedures. Ability to assist with instruction, print and write legibly, work with students in basic subject areas, understand and follow oral and written directions, learn the procedures, functions and limitations of assigned duties. Ability to monitor students according to approved policies and procedures. Demonstrated basic record-keeping techniques. Ability to operate instructional and office equipment. Physical Environment Work will be performed at all locations within the District as assigned. Typical work area consists of a classroom or other instructional space. Physical Requirements Requires the ability to lift up to 40 lbs. Position requires the ability to hear and speak within normal ranges. Ability to see to monitor students. Bending at the waist, kneeling or crouching. Dexterity of hands and fingers to operate computer keyboard.
