About the Role
The Installation Technician Trainee reports to the Installation Manager and is responsible for performing a range of HVACR installation jobs for industrial, commercial, and residential customers. This role requires decisiveness, initiative, tact, judgment, integrity, dependability, and the ability to communicate in a technically credible manner. Job-related contact includes customers, other Cosby Heating & Cooling technicians, the Installation Manager, the Estimator, and the Parts Runner.
Responsibilities
- Serve as a member of ad hoc Installation Department teams to conduct HVACR installation jobs efficiently and timely.
- Perform supervised and unsupervised basic HVACR installation support activities, such as:
- Fabricating simple fiberglass and sheet metal ducts and transitions.
- Installing sheet metal and fiberglass components, registers, and grilles.
- Stocking parts and installing refrigeration line sets, including soldering and brazing.
- Installing power and control wiring.
- Assisting Installation Technicians and Senior Installation Technicians.
- Perform progressively more difficult technical roles under direct supervision, such as:
- Measuring and threading piping.
- Using basic test equipment.
- Assisting in start-up, charge, test, and balance procedures.
- Performing home rough-ins.
- Installing residential units (gas, oil, electric furnaces, air conditioners, and heat pumps).
- Perform related trainee duties as directed by the Installation Manager.
Qualifications
- High school graduate or equivalent, and enrolled in or a graduate of a post-secondary formal HVACR program of instruction.
- Good verbal and reading skills, including the ability to read and apply manufacturers' instructions and communicate clearly with customers, suppliers, and employees.
- Physical ability to perform duties under varying conditions, including:
- Lifting and carrying a 100 lb. load (of typical HVACR job size and shape) a distance of 50'.
- Carrying a 100 lb. motor up a fully extended 32' ladder.
- Safely erecting a 32' extension ladder.
- No fear of heights and high places (acrophobia).
- Interest and initiative in maintaining and advancing HVACR skills through self-study, company training, manufacturers' workshops, and other professional development activities.
- Current (state) operator's license and ability to operate all types of vehicles in the corporate fleet within 30 days of employment. Must be insurable by Cosby Heating & Cooling insurance carrier.
- Ability to work efficiently under time pressures, non-standard schedules, extreme weather conditions, varying customer needs, and backlog constraints.
