About the role

The Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) seeks an experienced INSPECTOR III to join the team responsible for inspecting and monitoring work activities within the state’s Right of Way. The role involves verifying compliance with FDOT specifications, conducting surveys, and preparing documentation for payment to contractors.

Responsibilities

  • Analyze complex plans and perform independent technical assignments.
  • Verify work conforms to State and Federal specifications, plans, permits, policies, procedures, statutes, and rules.
  • Perform approved testing techniques using hand tools, gauges, and instruments.
  • Communicate technical information verbally and in writing.
  • Interpret documents related to Temporary Traffic Control device usage and installation.
  • Review work site activities for safety compliance and implement corrective measures.
  • Conduct surveys of signs, guardrails, and attenuators.
  • Prepare documentation for maintenance contract validation.
  • Attend pre-work conferences and meetings with contractors, utility owners, and permit applicants.
  • Issue work documents on contracts as directed.
  • Perform plans reviews for constructability and adherence to Department standards.
  • Provide comments on Department policies and procedures.
  • Assist in MMS/RCI evaluations and report routine maintenance conditions.
  • Prepare and issue work documents as needed.
  • Support MMS/RCI Coordinator with data entry and report preparation.
  • Work with Department of Corrections inmates and handle hazardous materials.
  • Drive state vehicles and be available for emergency response.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Knowledge of engineering tools for field inspections.
  • Skilled in verbal and written communication.
  • Understanding and interpretation of plans, specifications, design standards, and manuals.
  • Effective customer interaction.
  • Handling stress and multitasking.
  • Computer skills and database organization.

Other Job-Related Requirements

  • Complete self-study courses in Construction Math and Plans Reading within 11 months of appointment.
  • Obtain Advanced Temporary Traffic Control (Maintenance of Traffic) certification and Qualified Stormwater Management Inspector certification within one year.
  • Valid Class E Driver License with an acceptable driving record.
  • Work with Department of Corrections inmates and handle hazardous materials.
  • Be available for night and weekend work and emergency response.

Minimum Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Class E Drivers License.
  • 12 months of infrastructure design, construction, or maintenance experience.
  • Associate's Degree or higher.
  • Valid Class E driver license with an acceptable driving record.

Special Requirements

  • Provide Social Security Number for verification.
  • Register with Selective Service System if male and born on or after October 1, 1962.
