About the role
The Bureau of Automotive Repair (BAR) Smog Check Referee program aims to enhance the smog check process and contribute to reducing air pollution in California. Referee centers, state-contracted facilities, provide essential services to California motorists, including specialized repairs not available at other stations. The Foundation for California Community Colleges manages this program at 31 community college campuses, offering valuable career training opportunities for students.
Responsibilities
- Perform emissions, OBD compliance, and other specialized inspections in high-volume areas.
- Assist Referee staff and management with Smog Check Referee and other tasks as assigned.
- Work alternative hours and days at various locations using portable equipment.
- Communicate inspection results and information to vehicle owners and program management.
- Promote the mission of the Foundation through BAR's Smog Check Referee Program.
- Maintain a calm, helpful, and professional demeanor during interactions with consumers.
- Maintain communication with Regional Manager and other Referee sites.
- Reply to technical questions from consumers.
Requirements
- Relevant AA/AS degree, equivalent work experience, or a combination of both.
- Minimum of 1+ year of related work experience.
- BAR EO Inspector license.
- Experience performing vehicle smog inspections preferred, but not required.
- Knowledge of current principles and practices of automobile repair and technology.
- Understanding of California state and local automotive repair policies and codes.
- Knowledge of BAR smog check procedures.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite and system maintenance applications.
- Strong initiative and ability to learn quickly.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.

Pay
Budgeted hourly pay range: $18.00 - $22.00. Final salary and rates are based on education, experience, skills relevant to the role, and internal equity.
Schedule
Temporary, limited-term position for 1 year. Work schedule varies based on location and task requirements.
