About the role

The Bureau of Automotive Repair (BAR) Smog Check Referee program aims to enhance the smog check process and contribute to reducing air pollution in California. Referee centers, which are state-contracted emission test facilities, provide comprehensive services to California motorists, including specialized services not available at other stations. The Foundation for California Community Colleges (Foundation) manages this program at 31 Community College campuses, offering valuable career training opportunities for students.

Responsibilities

  • Perform emissions, OBD compliance, and other specialized inspections, often in high-volume areas of the state.
  • Absorb and assist Referee staff and management in various duties as assigned.
  • Work alternative hours and at various remote locations, using portable equipment.
  • Communicate inspection results and information to vehicle owners and program management.
  • Promote the mission of the Foundation through the BAR's Smog Check Referee Program.
  • Maintain a calm, helpful, and professional demeanor when interacting with consumers.
  • Establish and maintain rapport with staff and students, attend meetings, and prepare/distribute necessary reports.
  • Answer various technical questions from consumers.

Requirements

  • Relevant AA/AS degree, equivalent work experience, or a combination of both.
  • Minimum of 1+ year of related work experience.
  • BAR EO Inspector license.
  • Experience performing vehicle smog inspections preferred, but not required.
  • Knowledge of current principles and practices of automobile repair and technology, including California state and local automotive repair policies and codes, and BAR smog check procedures.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite and system maintenance applications.
  • Strong initiative and ability to learn quickly.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.

Pay

Budgeted hourly pay range: $18.00 - $22.00. Final salary and rates are based on education, experience, skills relevant to the role, and internal equity.

Schedule

The Inspection Assistant position is a temporary, limited-term position for 1 year.
