Inside Machinist J1 -J 4
About the role
We are seeking two Inside Machinist Journeyperson J1-J4 positions in our Inside Machine Shop located in Norfolk, Virginia. The shift is 0600-1445, with some weekend work.
Responsibilities
- Set up and operate conventional and special-purpose machines to fabricate metallic and nonmetallic parts.
- Select, align, and secure holding fixtures, cutting tools, attachments, accessories, and materials on machines.
- Calculate and set controls to regulate machining factors, such as speed, feed, coolant flow, and depth and angle of cut.
- Start and observe machine operation to detect malfunctions or out-of-tolerance machining and adjust machine controls or control media as required.
- Verify conformance of finished work piece to specifications using precision measuring instruments.
- Set up and operate machine on trial run to verify accuracy of machine settings.
- Fits and assembles parts into complete assembly, using jigs, fixtures, surface plate, surface table, hand tools, and power tools.
- Verify dimensions and alignment of assembly using measuring instruments, such as micrometers, height gauges, and gauge blocks.
- May install machined replacement parts in mechanisms, machines, and equipment and test operation of unit to ensure functionality and performance.
Requirements
- Knowledge of machine shop theory and procedures, shop mathematics, machinability of materials and layout techniques.
- Blueprint reading, sketches, drawing, manuals, specifications or sample part to determine dimensions and tolerance of finished work piece, sequence of operations and setup requirements.
- Measure, mark, scribe dimensions and reference points on material or work piece as guides for subsequent machining.
Qualifications
- Journeyperson J1-J4: Requires a minimum of 5 years of relevant experience.
- Journeyperson J3: Requires a minimum of 3 years of relevant experience.
- Journeyperson J2: Requires a minimum of 1 year of relevant experience.
- Journeyperson J1: Requires a minimum of 6 months of relevant experience.
Skills
- Basic knowledge of machine shop theory and procedures.
- Shop mathematics and layout techniques.
- Blueprint reading, sketches, drawing, manuals, specifications or sample part to determine dimensions and tolerance of finished work piece, sequence of operations and setup requirements.
- Measuring, marking, scribing dimensions and reference points on material or work piece as guides for subsequent machining.
