Accountabilities
- Provides strategic and operational leadership for coding functions, ensuring teams deliver accurate, compliant, and efficient services.
- Focuses on workforce development, performance management, process improvement, and collaboration with key stakeholders to optimize revenue cycle outcomes.
- Lead and oversee inpatient hospital coding operations, including coding teams and supervisors across multiple locations.
- Develop and execute departmental strategies, operational plans, and performance goals aligned with organizational objectives.
- Build, mentor, and support high-performing coding teams through effective hiring, training, coaching, and performance management.
- Establish accountability frameworks to achieve productivity, quality, compliance, and financial performance targets.
- Monitor coding metrics, key performance indicators, and operational reports to identify trends, risks, and improvement opportunities.
- Drive continuous quality improvement initiatives by evaluating workflows, implementing best practices, and optimizing coding processes.
- Ensure compliance with government and commercial coding regulations, internal policies, and industry standards.
- Partner with compliance, legal, finance, revenue cycle, and operational leaders to address risks and improve performance.
- Support effective coding practices by maintaining strong relationships with physicians, providers, clients, and internal stakeholders.
- Develop and maintain coding policies, procedures, and education programs to ensure consistent execution across departments.
- Provide oversight for coding audits, system implementations, technology enhancements, and revenue cycle application improvements.
- Manage departmental budgets, operational expenses, and resource allocation to support strategic priorities.
- Communicate performance insights, financial impacts, and improvement initiatives through reports and presentations to leadership teams.
Requirements
- The ideal candidate brings extensive experience in healthcare coding, revenue cycle operations, and team leadership within a regulated healthcare environment.
- This role requires strong analytical capabilities, strategic thinking, and the ability to lead cross-functional initiatives that improve coding accuracy, compliance, and financial performance.
- A Bachelor’s degree in Healthcare Management, Business, Finance, Accounting, or a related field with relevant healthcare operations experience is preferred.
- An Associate degree in Health Information Technology combined with significant healthcare operations, coding, billing, auditing, or revenue cycle experience may be considered.
- Equivalent professional experience in healthcare operations, coding, billing, auditing, or revenue cycle management may substitute for formal education requirements.
- 7+ years of progressive experience in healthcare operations, patient account services, revenue cycle operations, healthcare auditing, or coding/billing management is required.
- Demonstrated experience leading coding teams, supervisors, and multi-site healthcare operations is essential.
- Strong knowledge of inpatient coding practices, healthcare reimbursement processes, and regulatory compliance requirements is necessary.
- Coding certification through AHIMA or AAPC is strongly preferred.
- A Master’s degree in Finance, Business Administration, Healthcare Administration, or a related field is preferred.
- Proven ability to analyze operational data, identify improvement opportunities, and develop effective solutions is required.
- Strong leadership, communication, presentation, and stakeholder management skills are necessary.
- Ability to manage complex projects, establish strategic goals, and execute initiatives effectively is crucial.
- Experience working with healthcare information systems, revenue cycle technology, and process improvement initiatives is beneficial.
