Initial Inspection Technician

About the Role

Be the first set of eyes on every vehicle at Holmes Motors. As an Automotive Initial Inspection Technician, you'll identify mechanical, safety, and condition issues before vehicles move through our reconditioning process. This role involves inspecting, diagnosing, maintaining, repairing, and documenting vehicles to ensure they meet our standards.

Responsibilities

• Road-test vehicles on an established route to identify unusual noises, vibrations, drivability concerns, and other issues.
• Perform a complete visual inspection on a lift, including exterior, interior, undercarriage, and under the hood, to spot damage, missing, broken, or worn components.
• Accurately document findings and request parts needed for repairs.
• Perform an oil change on every assigned vehicle and document the service.
• Use diagnostic equipment to scan vehicles for warning codes when dashboard warning lights are present and record results.
• Replace tires and TPMS sensors as needed, and balance tires after replacement or when diagnosing vibration concerns.
• Inspect and replace worn or out-of-spec brake components.
• Check all running, driving, and exterior lights; replace failed bulbs/components and document deficiencies.
• Perform a final check to verify all Initial Inspection work is completed before releasing the vehicle.
• Enter inspection findings and completed work into the Holmes Motors App.
• Route vehicles to the appropriate next department.
• Complete required paperwork and daily production/work logs.
• Assist with other day-to-day departmental responsibilities as assigned, including making second keys.

Requirements

• Practical automotive mechanical knowledge and hands-on experience.
• Ability to recognize when something doesn’t sound, feel, look, or operate correctly.
• Comfort with performing basic maintenance and repair work.
• Willingness and ability to learn how to use automotive diagnostic equipment.
• Strong attention to detail and accurate documentation skills.
• Clear communication of issues and findings.
• Ability to work independently and as part of a fast-moving team.
• Pride in leaving a vehicle better than you found it.

Qualifications

• Valid driver’s license.
• Available to work a 40-hour workweek (Monday through Friday, 6:30 AM – 3:30 PM).
• Own the hand tools necessary to perform assigned work.
• Capable of lifting up to 50 pounds.
• Able to work in varying temperatures and outdoor conditions when needed.
