Responsibilities

  • Review business and technical requirements to identify test conditions.
  • Develop detailed test plans, test cases, and test scripts.
  • Design, build, and maintain automated test frameworks and reusable test scripts.
  • Ensure automation integrates with CI/CD pipelines for continuous testing.
  • Execute automated test suites across different environments.
  • Perform functional, regression, smoke, and performance testing.
  • Execute manual tests when automation is not feasible or for exploratory testing.
  • Identify, document, and track defects in qTest.
  • Provide clear reproduction steps, logs, and screenshots.
  • Collaborate with developers and business users to resolve defects.
  • Validate data integrity and perform backend testing using SQL or APIs.
  • Ensure compliance with NYSIF standards, accessibility guidelines, and security requirements.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

For appointment via NY HELPS:

  • NYSIF employee with one year of permanent, competitive service as an Information Technology Specialist 1; OR
  • Bachelor’s or higher-level degree including or supplemented by 15 semester credit hours in computer science; OR
  • Bachelor’s or higher-level degree in any field AND one year of experience in information technology; OR
  • 60 semester credit hours including or supplemented by 15 semester credit hours in computer science AND one year of experience in information technology; OR
  • Two years of experience in information technology.

Note: Certain math and business courses, although taken as part of a computer science curriculum, are not counted towards the 15 semester credit hours.

For Competitive Appointment

  • Reachable on current Civil Service eligible list for this title.
  • Transfer: Current New York State employee with one year of permanent competitive class service in a title eligible for transfer under Section 70.1 or Section 52.6 of Civil Service Law. Eligible titles include, but are not limited to: Administrative Specialist 1; Contract Management Specialist 2; Human Resources Specialist 1. Appointments via transfer must not result in a second, consecutive transfer with an advancement of more than two S-grades.
  • Reinstatement: Candidates who have previously held the title, or a transferable title, may be eligible for consideration for reinstatement.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Prior experience with Tricentis Tosca, Tricentis qTest, and Azure DevOps, including test automation, test management, and application lifecycle management.

Additional Information

This title is part of the New York Hiring for Emergency Limited Placement Statewide Program (NY HELPS). For the duration of the NY HELPS Program, this title may be filled via a non-competitive appointment, meaning no examination is required but all candidates must meet the minimum qualifications. At a future date, employees hired under NY HELPS will have their non-competitive employment status converted to competitive status without needing to compete in an examination, affording them the same rights and privileges as competitive class employees of New York State. While serving permanently in a NY HELPS title, employees may take part in any promotion examination for which they are qualified.
