About the role
The IT Network Engineer is responsible for the administration and continuous improvement of the University’s network infrastructure across multiple physical campuses and cloud environments. This role ensures the availability and security of network systems, including on-premises and cloud-based resources. The position requires strong expertise in network infrastructure design and operations, security best practices, and troubleshooting complex network and security issues in a multi-site, hybrid environment.
Responsibilities
- Implement and manage enterprise network infrastructure across multiple campuses, including core and edge switching, routing, firewalls, wireless networks, and VPNs.
- Configure and support routing and switching technologies, including VLANs, routing protocols, and high availability network configurations.
- Maintain and enforce network and infrastructure security policies, standards, and procedures to ensure compliance with regulatory requirements and audit readiness.
- Manage core network services such as DNS, DHCP, IP address management, and Network Time Protocol to ensure reliable network operations.
- Configure and maintain firewall platforms.
- Maintain security policies, NAT configurations, and VPN access controls, including implementation and support of site-to-site VPN connections.
- Implement and secure cloud connectivity during the hybrid-to-cloud transition, including network segmentation, secure access controls, and integration with on-premises systems.
- Partner with IT leadership, application owners, vendors, and stakeholders to support the development of secure network and infrastructure architecture requirements aligned with business and academic needs.
- Work with external vendors, contractors, and IT team members to coordinate low voltage installation and network configuration for new classrooms, meeting rooms, and event spaces.
- Create and maintain documentation of network architecture, configurations, and security controls.
Requirements
This position follows a hybrid work schedule requiring a minimum of 3 days on campus.
Qualifications
- Undergraduate degree in computer science or at least 5 years of work experience in relevant field.
- Proven experience in network administration and security, with a focus on both areas.
- Strong knowledge of network protocols, routing, switching, and firewall management.
- Experience with network security tools and technologies, such as IDS/IPS, SIEM, and endpoint protection.
- Familiarity with cloud-based networking and security solutions.
- Strong working knowledge and experience with VMware ESXi 8.0.
- Strong understanding and working knowledge of Microsoft infrastructure products including Active Directory Services; DHCP; and DNS.
- Excellent problem-solving and analytical skills.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
- CompTIA Security+ certification is a plus.
- CompTIA Network+ certification is a plus.
- CCNA certification or above.
