About the Role
This position serves as a Subject Matter Expert (SME) in VMware, responsible for integrating, implementing, maintaining, testing, and monitoring system technology across the organization. The role leads and supports Infrastructure as Code (IaC) initiatives using deep PowerShell scripting expertise and mentors administrators to address complex technical challenges.
Responsibilities
- Lead and support the implementation of Infrastructure as Code (IaC) using PowerShell scripting.
- Manage and maintain domain controller administration, including upgrades, replication relationships, and disaster recovery.
- Mentor, coach, and guide administrators on complex technical matters requiring proactive strategies and in-depth evaluation.
- Lead technical projects and deliver short- and long-term technological solutions.
- Provide expert-level support for VMware infrastructure, including vSphere, vCenter, ESXi hypervisor management, vMotion, DRS, server builds, virtualized networking (Network I/O Control), integration of 3rd party fibre channel storage solutions, vSAN, and disaster recovery orchestration.
- Implement and mentor staff in VMware performance management, capacity planning, and disaster recovery orchestration initiatives; lead disaster recovery testing and ensure documentation is up-to-date and tested.
- Identify and improve existing processes through automation and scripting using configuration management and IaC tools to reduce manual operations and improve quality and speed of delivery.
- Plan, implement, and upgrade domain controllers and VMware systems, ensuring detailed quality documentation and critical review for completeness of change management processes.
- Oversee and manage domain infrastructure, including vulnerability management, CIS hardening of domain controllers and Windows servers, patching, integrations for vulnerability reduction, Kerberos, and Group Policy.
- Evaluate and review vendor SOW projects, participate in vendor discussions to resolve significant issues, and act as a resource for staff on existing applications or system operations involving the virtualized environment and domain.
- Evaluate licensing and review quotes for renewals and new services or tools.
- Make decisions and optimize future work using planning, testing, and proof of concepts.
- Provide clear, concise, and updated written communication for small and medium initiatives and review ITSM processes for continued improvement.
- Collaborate effectively with teammates and vendors, using feedback and audience-specific language to explain and resolve issues.
- Provide technical and task leadership, coaching, training, and direction to develop team depth on moderate to large-size projects with minimal supervision.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- Degree in a technical (STEM) field and four years’ experience in a technical role preferred, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Experience as an SME in multiple key technologies/platforms within the assigned technology domain, with a solid understanding of system security implications.
- VMware Certifications a plus: Professional VCP-DCV, Advanced Professional VCAP-DCV Deploy or VCAP-DCV Design, Design Expert VCDX-DCV.
- Periodic attendance at technical training relating to current and future system support duties.
- Proven skill implementing VMware virtual environments built on HPE hardware (DL380 and Synergy blade server frames) utilizing HPE best practices supporting Windows and Linux virtual machines, virtual networking, VLAN management, fibre channel storage integration, and Aria appliance monitoring tools with integration to ITSM alert management.
- Solid skills in PowerShell scripting to integrate automation, including configuration management, IaC expertise, observability, monitoring, and alerting.
- Demonstrated administration of Microsoft domain controllers, including primary (PDC) and secondary (SDC) controllers, replication, management, CIS hardening, upgrades, Kerberos key distribution center (KDC), certificate management, and disaster recovery.
Working Conditions
- Standard office environment with frequent telephone communication, computer operation, and office productivity machinery.
- Occasional moving and positioning of supplies in excess of 20 pounds.
- Ability to sit for prolonged periods and operate standard PC equipment.
- Ability to manage frequent deadlines and tight schedules.
- Required occasional on-call assistance outside of normal business hours.
Schedule
Hybrid work option with the opportunity to work from home up to two days per week. Eligibility dependent upon factors detailed in the organization's Work from Home Policy.
