About the Role

Under minimal supervision and according to established policies and procedures, the Infection Prevention Specialist II assesses, evaluates, and provides for the needs of professional staff in infectious disease and infection prevention and control practices. This advanced-level position conducts a robust surveillance program for nosocomial infections based on internal thresholds, external benchmarks, and legal requirements. The role utilizes effective methodologies to improve performance and reduce the risk of hospital-acquired infections while providing education to the multidisciplinary team and community as appropriate.

The IPS II leads or co-leads multidisciplinary teams, guides implementation plans, and acts as a consultant or facilitator on infection prevention issues, including outbreak investigations, proactive strategies, and complex case reviews. The position designs and delivers educational programs to assist employees, physicians, and leadership in meeting infection prevention, safety, regulatory, and quality goals.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct surveillance for nosocomial infections according to internal thresholds, external benchmarks, and legal requirements.
  • Implement methodologies to improve performance and reduce the risk of hospital-acquired infections.
  • Lead or co-lead multidisciplinary teams on infection prevention initiatives, including outbreak investigations and complex case reviews.
  • Design and deliver educational programs for employees, physicians, and leadership on infection prevention, safety, and regulatory compliance.
  • Act as a consultant or facilitator on infection prevention issues for senior administrators, nursing, and medical leaders.
  • Perform complex project work with interdisciplinary groups independently, with minimal supervision.

Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing or other health-related field (required).
  • Master’s Degree in Nursing, Public Health, or related field (preferred).
  • Graduate coursework in statistics, clinical microbiology, epidemiology, and infection prevention and control (preferred).
  • Minimum of five (5) years of experience in healthcare, preferably in a hospital or ambulatory setting.
  • Experience leading complex change and project management with multidisciplinary healthcare teams and senior leadership.
  • Professional-level knowledge of disease processes, transmission methods of infectious diseases, clinical bacteriology, and clinical care practices.

Qualifications

  • State of Michigan RN license (if applicant is a nurse).
  • Certification in Infection Control (CIC) (required).
  • Basic computer skills, including experience with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, SharePoint) and electronic health records.
  • Proficiency in medical terminology and understanding of medical confidentiality.
