About the Role
This position involves advanced surface preparation and coating application using abrasive blasting and painting techniques. The role includes mentoring junior staff, ensuring compliance with safety and environmental standards, and maintaining high-quality finishes on various surfaces.
Responsibilities
- Prepare and clean surfaces using advanced abrasive blasting methods (e.g., sandblasting, water blasting) to remove rust, old coatings, or other contaminants.
- Apply coatings, paints, primers, and finishes to metal, wood, and other surfaces, ensuring uniform coverage and high-quality finishes.
- Select and mix appropriate materials, coatings, and abrasives based on the specific requirements of each job.
- Operate and maintain complex painting and blasting equipment, ensuring all tools are in optimal working condition.
- Inspect surfaces before and after coating to ensure proper preparation and finish quality.
- Review project specifications and provide input on project planning, ensuring all requirements are met.
- Train and mentor less experienced Painter/Blaster II staff, providing guidance on techniques and safety practices.
- Adhere to safety standards and follow established procedures for handling hazardous materials and chemicals.
- Ensure compliance with industry regulations and environmental standards.
- Perform quality control inspections and complete the required documentation for each job.
Requirements
- High school diploma or GED; additional technical training or certification is preferred.
- Minimum of 1-2 years of experience in painting and abrasive blasting.
- Advanced knowledge of surface preparation, paint application, and blasting techniques.
- Ability to select and mix materials according to specifications.
- Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
- Ability to operate and maintain a variety of blasting and painting equipment.
- Excellent communication and team leadership skills.
- Ability to lift heavy objects and perform physically demanding tasks.
- Strong commitment to safety and environmental compliance.
Preferred Skills
- Certification or training in safety protocols (OSHA 10 or similar).
- Experience in an industrial or construction setting.
Physical Requirements
- Work is primarily performed on construction job sites, exposed to outdoor elements and varying weather conditions.
- Must be able to work in confined spaces or elevated areas depending on the project.
- Physical labor may be required, including the ability to lift and move equipment or materials.
- Personal protective equipment (PPE) must be worn at all times for safety, including hard hat, safety glasses/goggles, respirators, ear plugs, steel-toed shoes, or other protective equipment as required.
- Flexibility to work extended hours or on weekends as project schedules require.
- Must be able to perform the essential functions of the job with or without reasonable workplace accommodation.
