Industrial Mechanical Engineer
AECOM is seeking a Senior Industrial Mechanical Engineer with experience in chem gas to lead the design of specialty gas, bulk gas, and chemical distribution systems for the Advanced Manufacturing practice. This role serves as the technical authority on hazardous production materials and ultra-high-purity (UHP) systems across semiconductor, battery, energy and nuclear fuel, and defense and aerospace sectors, working directly with client facilities, EHS, and tool teams from concept through turnover. The position may require travel to client sites and requires U.S. citizenship.
Responsibilities
- Design bulk and specialty gas systems (N₂, O₂, Ar, H₂, He, CDA; silane, NH₃, NF₃, HF, Cl₂, WF₆), including gas cabinets, VMBs/VMPs, purifiers, and point-of-use connections.
- Design bulk chemical distribution for acids, bases, solvents, CMP slurry, and battery electrolyte: dispense units, day tanks, reclaim, and double-contained piping with leak detection.
- Specify UHP materials and quality: EP 316L stainless, PFA/PVDF, orbital welding, cleanliness, and particle, moisture, and O₂ certification testing.
- Lead code and life-safety strategy: IBC/IFC Group H occupancy, MAQ and control-area analysis, HPM rooms, and HMIS/HMMP documentation.
- Coordinate toxic gas monitoring, emergency shutdown, and exhaust abatement with HVAC, fire protection, and controls.
- Develop P&IDs, utility matrices, tool hookup and point-of-connection (POC) design, and hydraulic and pressure-drop calculations.
- Support construction: submittals, RFIs, pressure and leak testing, commissioning, and turnover.
- Serve as client-facing technical lead in workshops and pursuits; mentor plumbing and mechanical engineers to extend AECOM’s process-system capability.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Mechanical or Chemical Engineering, or related field, and 6 years of experience designing specialty gas or chemical distribution systems for semiconductor, battery, pharmaceutical, or similar high-purity facilities (or demonstrated equivalency of experience and/or education).
- Working knowledge of NFPA 55, NFPA 400, ASME B31.3, IFC hazardous materials provisions, and CGA standards.
- PE license, or ability to obtain PE within 24 months.
- Proficiency in Revit and/or AutoCAD Plant 3D and P&ID development.
- United States citizenship required.
Preferred Qualifications
- 8+ years of experience, including 5+ years designing specialty gas or chemical distribution systems for semiconductor, battery, pharmaceutical, or similar high-purity facilities.
- Semiconductor fab or tool-install experience; familiarity with SEMI S2, S6, and F-series standards and NFPA 318.
- Hydrogen systems, battery (electrolyte, NMP recovery), or NRC/DOE-regulated fuel-cycle facility experience.
- Background with an EPC, tool-install contractor, or industrial gas supplier.
- Steam, heat-transfer fluid, or process chemical system design.
- U.S. citizenship and ability to obtain a security clearance (required for Federal and defense projects).
