Be part of the nation’s only repository for the disposal of nuclear waste known as Transuranic (TRU) waste. Salado Isolation Mining Contractors, LLC (SIMCO) is the managing and operating contractor of the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP) and is seeking an Industrial Hygiene Technician to join our team in Carlsbad, New Mexico.

About the role

The successful candidate will support comprehensive routine Industrial Hygiene (IH) monitoring to reduce and control chemical, biological, physical, and environmental hazards in the workplace. Work environments include above ground and underground (mine) settings with potential exposure to equipment movement hazards, dangerous chemicals/solvents, or hazardous and radioactive materials if proper safety procedures are not followed.

Responsibilities

  • Ensure compliance with all applicable procedures, policies, contractual/operational requirements, safety guidelines, MSHA, DOE Orders, and local, state, and federal regulations.
  • Perform tasks according to detailed instructions and established procedures.
  • Analyze data within a limited scope and compare readings with pre-determined limits.
  • Assist in processing basic IH analyses and perform routine calculations according to specific guidelines and formulas.
  • Assist in generating reports, spreadsheets, and charts.
  • Actively participate in safety work groups.
  • Wear respirators and other protective equipment to enter various types of potentially hazardous areas (e.g., chemical, dust fumes, mists, heat stress factors).
  • Complete radiological work training.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned, including prolonged driving, machine operation, and working around moving equipment or motorized vehicles.
  • Work in environmental conditions that may include weather or temperature extremes, inclement weather (e.g., wind, rain, excessive heat, excessive cold, snow/ice).

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree, or Associate’s degree with four (4) years of relevant experience, or High School Diploma or equivalency with eight (8) years of relevant experience.
  • Must be able to use a respirator and pass a pulmonary function test.
  • Radiological training is required or the ability to obtain it.
  • Intermediate computer skills, including Microsoft Office.
  • Intermediate interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Must be able to carry several instruments, equipment, or tools while walking extensively.
  • Potential prolonged walking/standing, repeated pushing/pulling.
  • Must be able to perform medium to very heavy work, exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally (non-repetitive), up to 50 pounds frequently (any exertion of force/lifting greater than 45 pounds requires a two-person "buddy system"), and/or more than 20 pounds constantly (repetitive).
  • Must be able to work in confined areas, tanks, heat stress conditions, high noise, and areas with radiation and chemical hazards.
  • Must be 18 years of age.
  • Must be authorized to work and remain in the United States without SIMCO visa sponsorship now or in the future.
  • Must be able to obtain a Department of Energy badge for access to the WIPP Site (even if teleworking, must comply with security requirements to obtain a badge).
  • Non-U.S. citizens from countries identified by the Department of Energy as posing heightened security concerns are subject to additional security requirements that limit site access.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience working at the WIPP site.
  • Experience in industrial, technical, medical, laboratory, mining, construction, or production work environments.
  • Experience in safety-related job functions.
  • Experience performing sampling/monitoring and recording data.
  • Experience conducting inspections.
  • Experience working with a respirator and personal protective equipment for standard industrial workplace hazards.

Pay

Salary range: $70,972 to $123,573 per year (non-exempt grade levels 28-30). The specific salary offered will be influenced by the candidate’s relevant experience and education.

Schedule

This position must be open to work a variety of shifts, including four 10-hour days (4-day workweek).
