About the Role
A product as transformational as the home robot deserves a world-class design. Every fabric, finish, and mechanical detail influences how people perceive, trust, and live alongside our robots. As our Industrial Designer, you’ll define the physical form and experience of our robots from sketch through production. You’ll work closely with mechanical, electrical, robotics, and manufacturing engineers to create products that are elegant, intuitive, manufacturable, and built for the real world. This is a rare opportunity to shape, and bring your own vision to, an entirely new kind of technology.
Responsibilities
- Own industrial design: Lead the industrial design of Weave’s robotic products from concept through production.
- Drive form and surface development: Translate design intent into production-ready 3D geometry, with a high standard for surface quality, continuity, proportion, transitions, gaps, and part relationships.
- Own CMF development: Define materials, colors, textures, finishes, graphics, and softgoods in partnership with engineering and manufacturing, including development of production samples and appearance standards.
- Prototype rapidly: Generate and evaluate concepts through sketching, CAD, physical prototypes, and iterative experimentation.
- Design for production: Collaborate closely with mechanical, electrical, firmware, and robotics engineers to balance aesthetics, functionality, manufacturability at scale, serviceability, and reliability.
- Partner with suppliers and manufacturing engineering through tooling, color/material matching, first articles, cosmetic reviews, and production ramp to preserve design intent.
- Collaborate across disciplines: Work closely with engineering, software, and UI & Interaction design to create seamless experiences across physical and digital touchpoints.
Requirements
- Exceptional industrial design experience: 5+ years of industrial design work in consumer electronics, robotics, or other complex physical products, along with a portfolio demonstrating outstanding consumer product thinking, form development, and execution.
- Exceptional 3D form development: Advanced CAD and surfacing skills, including complex curvature, Class-A-quality surface development, surface continuity, and the ability to translate design intent into robust production geometry.
- Strong CMF sensibility: Demonstrated experience developing materials, colors, textures, finishes, and cosmetic specifications for high-quality consumer products.
- A modern design toolkit: Strong proficiency with modern industrial design tools such as SolidWorks, 3D MCAD, Fusion 360, Rhino, Alias, or Creo.
- Physical prototyping experience: Experience with sketching, CAD modeling, rapid prototyping, and iterative physical development for electro-mechanical components and assemblies.
- DFM knowledge: Experience accounting/planning for different manufacturing methods (e.g., injection molding, stamping, die-casting, compression molding, etc.) in your designs to facilitate mass-production. Ideally, you can speak to how you've iterated designs across production batches or product generations to achieve this.
- Collaborative mindset: Excellent collaboration skills for working cross-functionally with engineering teams and counterparts in UI & Interaction Design.
- Innate curiosity: Vision and enthusiasm for the potential of home robotics and designing products that operate autonomously in the physical world.
Nice to Have
- Experience designing for articulated or actuated robotic products.
- Experience with rapid prototyping technologies including 3D printing and CNC machining.
- Experience designing products across multiple generations and launches.
- History of collaborating with suppliers around the world on part manufacturing and final assembly, including onsite factory support, is a plus.
