About the Role
Join our team as an Industrial Designer and support our growing 3D design efforts. This role involves working closely with Product Development, Design, and Shanghai-based teams to design products from initial concept ideation through engineering stages in a fast-paced, rapid prototyping environment.
Responsibilities
- Partner with Product Design on product ideation and concept generation.
- Provide input on manufacturability of product concepts.
- Offer 3D design suggestions and direction.
- Develop new ideas through rapid ideation, 2D sketching, and 3D design while considering cost and manufacturability.
- Utilize SolidWorks to create 3D renders.
- Create rapid prototypes using foam core, modeling compounds, 3D prints, or additive manufacturing for evaluation and review.
- Develop, edit, and update design documentation to communicate design intent to internal and overseas teams.
- Apply Design for Manufacturing (DFM) principles, understanding toy manufacturing processes and creating DFM specifications to communicate design language and intent.
- Collaborate in a cross-functional environment with Product Design, Product Development, Sourcing, and Production teams to meet cost, performance, and launch timing objectives.
- Make recommendations to management regarding product schedules, development progress, and proposed design changes.
Qualifications
- 0-3 years of experience in Industrial Design.
- Experience with toys and/or arts and crafts products is required (school projects acceptable for entry-level candidates).
- Proficiency in SolidWorks is required.
- Experience working with licensed brands/products.
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in Industrial Design highly preferred.
- Excellent sketching, form development, CAD modeling, rendering, and graphic skills.
- Working knowledge of materials and mass production procedures; knowledge of plastic injection molding highly preferred.
- Experience building proof-of-concept models and working with 3D print shops, shop tools, and manufacturing processes highly preferred.
- Comfortable with all phases of the design process, from research to concept development and detail design for manufacturing.
- Strong ability in hands-on model making and prototyping.
- Willingness to work closely with and take direction from senior design team members.
- Ability to work on-site in New Providence, NJ up to 3 times per week for prototyping and sample review.
