Industrial Design Intern

This position is located at our HQ in Durham, NC. Expected program dates are September 14 – December 4. Anticipated working hours will be about 20 per week. Final hours and schedule will be determined between the intern and their manager. Toshiba Global Commerce Solutions will not be providing visa sponsorship for this position.

Responsibilities

  • Use SolidWorks to create first-pass CAD for new concepts and their iterations, proving out concepts using 3D printers or other modeling methods.
  • Perform industry research and create presentations on findings.
  • Participate in product development meetings and brainstorming sessions.
  • Present designs, concepts, and models to the team.
  • Generate user interfaces for concept products.
  • Engage in shop experiences to prototype “proof of concept” parts using hand tools, bench-top power tools, and 3D printing.
  • Create simple mockups using materials such as foam, foamcore, and wood.

The role is roughly 25% design and 75% production.

Requirements

  • Proficiency in SolidWorks and basic CAD skills.
  • Working knowledge of Photoshop, Illustrator, and PowerPoint.
  • Good written and visual presentation skills; hand sketching is a plus.
  • Experience with basic shop tools: hand tools, bench-top power tools.
  • Ability to create simple mockups using foam, foamcore, wood, etc.
  • Motivated self-starter who proactively seeks tasks and asks, “What else can I help with?”
  • Basic research skills, including user and market studies.
  • Ability to communicate ideas effectively to a team, both in person and virtually.
  • Understanding of the design process.
  • UI/UX knowledge is a plus.

Preferred Skills

  • Experience with 3D printer usage.
