Industrial Controls Technician

This position will perform under minimal supervision.

Responsibilities

  • Maintains production equipment, including repair, preventive maintenance, controls, calibrations, electrical, and troubleshooting.
  • Works with engineering, maintenance, and approved vendors to install complex electronic equipment such as:
    • Automatic, machine, and process controls (e.g., Allen-Bradley PLC, HMI platforms)
    • Robots and camera systems
    • Network communication systems
  • Performs hands-on complex repairs and adjustments while supporting safety policies, procedures, goals, and objectives.
  • Provides technical support to manufacturing, including troubleshooting and repairing equipment with older controls and installing new controls.
  • Ensures machine programs are backed up and stored in the ICT database.
  • Maintains equipment and materials used for repairs and special projects in good working order.
  • Communicates with mechanics, supervisors, engineering personnel, quality control, and managers.
  • Collaborates with engineering on special projects, equipment failures, and equipment upgrades.
  • Troubleshoots and repairs equipment, including replacing gears, cams, chain drives, and other mechanical components.
  • Performs electrical repairs (e.g., replacing switches, fuses, relays, and motors) working with voltages from 24 VDC up to 600 VAC.
  • Keeps the latest software versions to support PLCs for the factory floor; change requests come via email from maintenance, engineers, managers, and coordinators.
  • Ensures the latest software revisions for equipment are maintained.
  • Uses precision tools (e.g., calipers, micrometers) and understands, modifies, and programs for programmable controllers.
  • Reads and interprets electrical, hydraulic, pneumatic schematic diagrams, and mechanical component drawings.
  • Builds electrical panels and creates electrical schematics using AutoCAD.
  • Works safely with electrical voltages (24 VDC to 600 VAC), air pressure (up to 150 PSI), and hydraulic pressure (up to 2000 PSI).
  • Performs other duties as assigned, including non-complex or complex mechanical problems.

Requirements

  • 5 years of experience in an Industrial Controls Technician role with progressive responsibility.
  • Associate Degree in Electronics or equivalent (desired).
  • Hands-on experience in programming and troubleshooting PLCs.
  • Experience with Allen-Bradley programming (500 & controls logic, RS Logic).
  • Knowledge of robot operation or programming.
  • Ability to program HMI panels (primarily Allen-Bradley).
  • Knowledge of setting up and programming servo drives.
  • Working knowledge of the National Electrical Code.
  • Basic knowledge of OSHA industrial safety standards and PPE.
  • Ability to read, write, and communicate in English.
  • Analytic skills and ability to troubleshoot PLCs and repair automation/electromechanical equipment.
  • Ability to troubleshoot AC and DC control systems.
  • Moderate visual effort required for precision work with close tolerances.
  • Must provide a basic complement of tools for machinery repair.
  • Proficiency in using and reading test equipment (e.g., calipers, micrometers, dial indicators, levels, volt-ohm meters, amp meters, pressure gauges).
  • Ability to work without close supervision on day-to-day assignments and special projects.
  • Must pass a color blindness test and be able to differentiate colors.
  • Must pass full-face respirator certification and wear a respirator as needed.
