Indigenous Student Advisor - Faculty of Business and Management

About the role
The Indigenous Student Advisor enhances the recruitment, retention, and success of Business and Management students of Indigenous ancestry. Reporting to the Associate Dean, Faculty of Business and Management, you will work within the School of Business and Entrepreneurship and the School of Hospitality, Tourism and Applied Aesthetics to implement the Indigenous Student Success Strategy—miyowahkohtowin. The role supports the transition to post-secondary education, retention, and success of Indigenous students, while promoting Saskatchewan Polytechnic’s Business and Management programs in Indigenous communities and across the province.
Responsibilities
- Provide academic and personal advisement and support to Indigenous Business and Management students and other students as required.
- Contact each Indigenous Business and Management student upon admission to provide information and answer questions.
- Conduct orientations for Business and Management programs with students and their families.
- Support the transition of students and families to post-secondary and urban environments.
- Arrange and facilitate student support services, including counselling, tutors, access to elders, cultural activities, and financial application support.
- Establish proactive, student-centered relationships with campus community members, Indigenous student centers, student development, enrollment services, and elders.
- Liaise with high school guidance counsellors, funding agencies, sponsors, community, and cultural agencies.
- Facilitate problem-solving with students and support the achievement of personalized student learning plans.
- Facilitate group processes such as sharing circles and study circles.
- Assist students in obtaining summer employment.
- Participate in student advisor activities and committees at Saskatchewan Polytechnic.
- Maintain records of student-related information and program statistics.
- Travel as required; ability to work irregular hours.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Education, Business, or a related field. An equivalent combination of education and relevant experience will also be considered.
- Minimum of two years of recent and relevant experience providing coaching, counselling, or advising to Indigenous people, preferably in a post-secondary institution.
- Demonstrated knowledge and experience with the network of social, financial, and support agencies serving Indigenous communities.
- Effective communication (oral and written) and interpersonal skills.
- Strong organization, problem-solving, and planning skills.
- Ability to work in a team environment, develop and foster collaborative relationships, and work with diverse groups and stakeholders.
- Ability to be self-directed and work independently.
- Proficiency in common computer software packages such as MS Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint).
- Demonstrated commitment to valuing diversity.
Schedule
- Part-time role with full-time hours (1442.75 hours total).
- Assigned 99 days per academic year, from September 1, 2026, to January 31, 2027.
- May be based at any of Saskatchewan Polytechnic’s four campus locations: Saskatoon, Moose Jaw, Regina, or Prince Albert.
