About the role

The incumbent serves as a Teaching Assistant in the Education Department of a juvenile correctional facility. In the absence of the classroom teacher, the Teaching Assistant supervises students, manages the classroom, and supports instruction. The role reports directly to the School Principal and operates with minimal supervision.

Responsibilities

• Supervise students in the classroom, including taking attendance, monitoring behavior, tracking assignments, and maintaining daily records.
• Provide guidance to students in completing assignments left by the classroom teacher and support classroom instruction as needed.
• Effectively manage the classroom and maintain a positive learning environment.
• Follow policy during critical incidents to prevent injury, escape, or property damage.
• Maintain confidentiality of student information and facility operations.
• Supervise and evaluate student progress and achievement.
• Operate all job-related equipment safely and effectively.
• Collaborate with other departments to enhance the learning environment.
• Provide written reports and participate in multidisciplinary treatment team meetings.
• Attend and successfully complete all required training and certifications.
• Develop and review clear, accurate, and concise reports in compliance with departmental policies.
• Promote positive working relationships with students, staff, contractual personnel, interns, volunteers, and community agencies.
• Maintain a professional public image in all responsibilities.
• Perform related duties as assigned.

Requirements

• Ability to implement daily and weekly teacher lesson plans to enforce course objectives in the absence of an educator.
• Ability to create and maintain a positive learning environment that supports individual student growth and development.
• Ability to manage educational department supplies, equipment, and tools effectively.
• Strong oral and written communication skills.
• Ability to work effectively in a team environment.
• Ability to accept supervision and constructive feedback.
• Must test negative on all drug tests.
• Must successfully complete all required training and certifications.
