Rotation Overview
To provide the learner with hematology oncology experience in a rural clinical setting.
Supervision and Support
Practice rural medicine with increased autonomy under the supervision of an attending physician, particularly with new patient visits.
Collaborate actively with the medical, nursing, and social work teams to optimize patient care, accounting for the unique needs of cancer patients in a rural setting.
Resources and Services
- Use network resources such as tumor boards, e-consults, and referrals when appropriate.
- Connect patients to the proper psychosocial supports, such as educational and/or counseling services in collaboration with an oncology social worker, to ensure holistic care.
Communication and Patient Care
- Communicate professionally and empathetically with patients and family members, considering patient concerns such as finances, access to other needed medical care, and their opinions on prognosis and end-of-life decisions.
Innovative Practices
- Encounter innovative practices used in rural healthcare such as remote molecular tumor boards.
Additional Duties
- Fellows only: Cover infusion room for acute reactions.
- Ad Hoc: Perform new inpatient consults at Pen Bay Hospital.
