About the role
The Special Education Assistant II provides educational and classroom assistance under the guidance of teachers, principals, and other supervisors. This role assists in carrying out instructional activities, promoting student safety and well-being, and reinforcing classroom programs. Key responsibilities include assisting with the supervision and instruction of special needs students, observing and documenting student progress, implementing instructional plans, and supporting students with special health needs. Duties are performed under risk of infection and injury and involve working with students who have intense learning, developmental, and behavioral needs.
Responsibilities
- Confer with teachers, supervisors, and colleagues to plan daily routines, programs, and special projects, including student-specific delegated healthcare and special projects to assist in evaluating progress and/or implementing 504, behavior plans, and IEP objectives.
- Perform program-related instructional, behavioral, and other activities, including helping students with individualized educational plans (IEP, behavior, safety, etc.).
- Undertake delegated instructional tasks for individuals and small groups; assist with classroom assignments and monitor student activities in the classroom and other locations.
- Perform instructional support tasks, such as leveling prepared worksheets, organizing materials, creating and posting bulletin boards, collecting data, and monitoring student progress.
- Implement classroom, small group, and individual social and behavioral management interventions/systems.
- Manage personal student information according to federal and state laws and District policies, maintaining strict confidentiality.
- Help maintain an orderly and attractive instructional area (e.g., preventing litter, putting up bulletin board displays, cleaning blackboards, storing supplies, setting up study areas).
- Perform routine clerical work, such as typing, photocopying, filing, record-keeping, and answering telephones.
- Supervise assigned building and classroom areas, including field trips, playground, lunch, hall, and bus duty, with on-bus supervision.
- Assist students with physical education and other recreational activities.
- Implement district and program-adopted crisis prevention/intervention strategies, including de-escalation procedures, physical interventions to avoid injuries, and other safety protocols. Must pass physical restraint training to maintain employment.
- Assist teachers and specialists in testing and assessing student skills; record and maintain accurate developmental data on student performance.
- Provide student safety, self-care, health care, medical protocols, hygiene care, and mobility assistance, which may include lifting, feeding, and toileting/diapering.
- Maintain positive communication with school personnel, community agencies, and parents/guardians under the direction of teachers and specialists.
- Implement prescribed physical therapy/medical assistance and support duties as directed by a healthcare professional.
- Attend District workshops and staff development classes to remain current on behavioral, medical, and data collection procedures.
- Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of all district policies and procedures.
- Ensure consistent, daily, and punctual attendance.
- Operate and troubleshoot various office equipment, including telephones and photocopy machines.
- Attend in-service trainings, staff meetings, and other meetings as assigned.
- Report issues to the principal and appropriate authorities, including safety, sanitary and fire hazards, vandalism, thefts, and errant wildlife.
Requirements
- High school diploma or GED is required; Associate Degree or two years of study at a community college/university is preferred.

- Ability to remain calm and professional in an environment with frequent interruptions and interact appropriately with staff and students.
- Fluent verbal and written communication in English, including proficiency in spelling and grammar.
- Ability to respond to inquiries or complaints from students, parents, staff, and community members.
- Ability to read and interpret documents such as governmental regulations, safety rules, and instruction manuals.
- Ability to prepare routine reports and correspondence with accuracy and professionalism.
- Basic mathematical skills, including addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, and the ability to calculate rates, ratios, percentages, and proportions.
- Ability to draw and interpret bar graphs.
- Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions in oral, written, or diagram form and deal with problems involving multiple variables.
- Proficiency in using office computers and internet access for email, research, word processing, database manipulation, visual presentations, and general web-based applications.
- Ability to exercise good judgment and work effectively in a dynamic environment.
- Valid First Aid Card is required.
- Must have or be able to obtain various certificates, licenses, and/or registrations as required by federal, state, or local law(s), including a valid Oregon Driver’s License.
Physical Expectations
- Regularly required to talk, see, or hear.
- Frequently required to walk, stand, sit, use fingers and hands for fine manipulation, handle or feel, reach with hands and arms, and move around inside and outside of buildings.
- Occasionally required to push, pull, bend, stoop, crawl, kneel, and crouch.
- Must lift and/or move up to 35 lbs; occasionally lift, with assistance, students weighing up to 150 pounds.
- May occasionally climb stairs or ladders.
- Must have, with or without vision correction, close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
- Must regularly use approved restraint and de-escalation procedures with students.
- Must occasionally move quickly and sometimes run to keep students safe and avoid injuries.
Work Environment
- Work environment is a regular and/or special needs classroom setting and other activity/learning areas.
- Noise level is usually low to moderate but occasionally high, depending on location, student population, and current activities.
- Occasionally required to supervise students during arrival/departure and recess.
- Occasionally exposed to wet or humid conditions and outdoor weather conditions, including seasonal heat and cold.
- May be exposed to contagious diseases, bodily fluids, blood-borne pathogens, moving parts of machinery, cleaning agents, hazardous chemicals, fumes, risk of electrical shock, and mechanical vibration.
Pay
$21.77 - $29.78/hour (depending on experience).
