Montgomery County Parks, Enterprise Division, is seeking energetic, fun, and dependable seasonal/intermittent applicants for positions at Wheaton Ice Arena or Cabin John Ice Rink. Work hours are flexible and may include mornings, weekdays, evenings, weekends, and holidays.
About the roles
- Ice Skate Guard (Starting at $15.45/hr): Responsible for the overall safety and supervision of public skating sessions.
- Ice Skating Instructional Assistant (Starting at $15.45/hr): Supports ice skating coaches to provide high-quality instruction during group lessons.
- Ice Rink Freestyle Monitor (Starting at $15.00/hr): Provides support to skaters and coaches during figure skating freestyle sessions.
- Ice Rink Snack Bar Attendant/Cashier (Starting at $15.00/hr): Prepares and sells food items from the concession stand.
- Ice Rink Pro Shop/Customer Service Representative (Starting at $15.00/hr): Manages retail pro shop operations and skate services.
- Custodian (Starting at $15.00/hr): Maintains cleanliness and sanitation of all public areas, locker rooms, restrooms, and facility spaces.
Responsibilities
Ice Skate Guard
- Enforce rules during public skating sessions for patron safety and enjoyment.
- Check wristbands and enforce building safety procedures.
- Provide customer service by answering questions, handing out rental skates, and giving directions.
- Provide basic first aid to injured patrons.
- Perform routine cleaning tasks like sweeping, emptying trash, and mopping.
Ice Skating Instructional Assistant
- Assist instructors on and off the ice with group classes, including helping skaters put on skates and answering questions.
- Aid skaters who may have additional needs.
- Provide encouragement to skaters and demonstrate skills as directed by the instructor.
- Knowledge of ice-skating instructional program levels and curriculum.
Ice Rink Freestyle Monitor
- Take attendance for freestyle sessions to ensure skaters have paid.
- Maintain organization of the monitors’ box, including skaters’ music and freestyle belts.
- Play skaters’ music in accordance with freestyle protocols and procedures.
- Enforce facility freestyle etiquette and educate others when necessary.
- Encourage a positive atmosphere amongst skaters and coaches.
- Communicate any issues to rink management.
Ice Rink Snack Bar Attendant/Cashier
- Prepare snack items for sale and operate food service-related equipment.
- Operate the POS system, collect fees, and answer customer questions.
- Follow food safety and security procedures involving cash and inventory.
- Clean and sanitize equipment, kitchen, and common areas.
Ice Rink Pro Shop/Customer Service Representative
- Assist customers with sales of skating-related merchandise, including fitting skates and hockey equipment.
- Maintain cleanliness of the pro shop, including sales floor and inventory restocking.
- Perform cashier duties following commission policies and procedures.
- Answer customer questions about skates and equipment.
- Sharpen skates and perform other skate services after training.
- Use POS systems, registration systems, and basic office applications.
Custodian
- Maintain cleanliness and sanitation of all public areas, locker rooms, restrooms, lobby, offices, and outside facility areas.
- Report building issues to management.
- Keep accurate inventory of janitorial supplies and equipment.
Requirements
All Positions
- Must display excellent customer service skills.
- Must be available to work flexible hours, including evenings, weekends, and holidays.
- Minimum age: 16 (18 for Custodian).
- Some positions require First Aid, CPR, and AED certifications (training provided).
- Ongoing training and internal growth opportunities available.
- Background investigation required prior to hire.
Ice Skate Guard
- Must be proficient at skating and able to skate for extended periods (up to 2 hours).
- Outgoing, teamwork-oriented, flexible, with strong customer service skills.
Ice Skating Instructional Assistant
- Must be proficient at skating through Free Skate 4 or Hockey advanced level.
- Must be able to skate for extended periods (up to 2 hours).
- Enthusiastic, punctual, patient, and a good communicator.
- Available to work during scheduled group lesson times after school and on weekends.
Ice Rink Freestyle Monitor
- Knowledge of freestyle session management preferred.
- Must be able to work in a cold environment for extended periods (up to 2 hours).
- Available to work during scheduled session times before/after school and on weekends.
Ice Rink Snack Bar Attendant/Cashier
- Must follow food safety and security procedures.
- Comfortable performing basic computer functions, including using a POS system.
- Cash handling experience preferred.
Ice Rink Pro Shop/Customer Service Representative
- Knowledge of skating equipment preferred.
- Cash handling experience preferred.
- Comfortable performing basic computer functions, including POS and registration systems.
Custodian
- Requires long periods of standing, frequent walking, bending, crouching, stooping, stretching, or reaching.
- Repetitive lifting of objects up to 49 pounds.
- Work hours include weekday and weekend night shifts.
