IBM WebSphere System Administrator
Location: Remote | Contract | Hourly Pay Range: $55-$85
About the Role
We are seeking an IBM WebSphere System Administrator to provide hands-on middleware administration and automation support for critical enterprise applications. This role centers on IBM WebSphere Network Deployment (ND) and WebSphere Liberty, with a strong emphasis on UNIX/Linux operations, scripting, and automation.
Responsibilities
- Administer and support IBM WebSphere Application Server environments that run critical enterprise applications
- Install, configure, maintain, troubleshoot, and optimize WebSphere environments, including WebSphere ND and Liberty
- Support WebSphere components including HTTP servers, application servers, Java, and plug-ins
- Execute troubleshooting across failover, disaster recovery, security configuration, certificate management, performance tuning, and connectivity issues
- Develop, implement, and maintain automation using Ansible, Python/Jython, and Shell scripting
- Identify and deliver automation opportunities that improve operational efficiency and reliability
- Partner with development, operations, security, and other technical teams to design and implement automation solutions
- Support CI/CD processes and automation frameworks using GitLab
- Troubleshoot complex issues involving WebSphere and connected technologies
- Support integrations and connectivity between WebSphere and IBM MQ, file transfer systems, and Oracle/SQL databases
- Document automation processes, procedures, configurations, and best practices
- Participate in change management processes and implement changes in accordance with established procedures
- Mentor team members, conduct code reviews, and share technical knowledge across the team
- Continuously improve automation frameworks for scalability, reliability, maintainability, and performance
- Communicate technical issues and solutions clearly to technical and business stakeholders
Requirements
- Hands-on administration of IBM WebSphere Application Server, including strong expertise in WebSphere ND and/or Liberty
- Experience with WebSphere Application Server 8.5.5 and 9.x ND editions
- UNIX/Linux administration skills
- Scripting experience with Shell scripting and Python/Jython
- Hands-on experience with Ansible automation
- Experience with GitLab and CI/CD environments
- Knowledge of WebSphere HTTP, Application Server, Java, and plug-in components
- Experience with WebSphere troubleshooting, installation, configuration, failover, disaster recovery, security configuration, certificate management, and performance tuning
- Experience supporting enterprise middleware integrations including MQ, file transfer, and database connectivity
- Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills, including the ability to remain calm and methodical during incidents
- Strong communication and collaboration skills with customers, technical partners, and cross-functional teams
- Ability to articulate technical issues and business impact to non-technical stakeholders
- Familiarity with enterprise change management processes
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with WebSphere Liberty in addition to traditional WebSphere ND environments
- Experience with WebSphere MQ
- Experience with XL Deploy or similar deployment/automation tools
- Familiarity with AWS
- Experience with Terraform
- Experience developing and maintaining enterprise automation frameworks
- Experience mentoring other engineers and conducting code reviews
- Experience working in environments with formal incident, change, and release management processes
