I&E Technician (End Plant)

POSITION SUMMARY

Our Waco, TX facility manufactures aluminum ends/lids for beverage cans commonly used for soft drinks, beers, energy drinks, teas and non-carbonated beverages. Using state of the art end-making technology, this high-speed environment provides rewarding manufacturing opportunities.

Essential Job Functions

  • Troubleshoot, diagnose, and repair complex faults within PLC hardware (e.g., Allen-Bradley, Siemens) and software (Ladder Logic, Function Block).

  • Utilize programming software (e.g., RSLogix 5000) to monitor I/O, modify logic, and upload/download programs safely.

  • Diagnose and resolve issues within industrial control networks (e.g., EtherNet/IP, ControlNet).

  • Maintain and verify current backup copies of all critical PLC programs, HMI applications, and configuration files.

Instrumentation & Calibration

  • Execute routine and preventative maintenance calibration procedures for key process instruments, including pressure, temperature, flow, level, and analytical transmitters (e.g., 4-20mA, HART protocol).

  • Repair, replace, and install various field devices such as photo-eyes, proximity sensors, solenoids, limit switches, and control valves.

  • Maintain, troubleshoot, and calibrate specialized high-speed sensors used in the process, such as Compound Weight, Buckle Resistance, and Curing Oven controls.

Electrical & Power Systems

  • Expertly troubleshoot electrical circuits up to 480V.

  • Identify and repair faults in motor control centers (MCCs), power distribution panels, and complex wiring harnesses.

  • Install, configure, and troubleshoot Variable Frequency Drives (VFDs) and Servo systems to optimize machine speed and positioning.

  • Strict adherence to all electrical safety protocols, including Lockout/Tagout (LOTO) and NFPA 70E (Arc Flash) procedures.

Machine Vision & Quality Systems

  • Maintain and troubleshoot high-speed camera and inspection systems (e.g., Pressco, Sencon) used for end-of-line quality checks (compound, cut edge, lacquer coverage).

  • Aid Quality and Production teams with optimizing vision system recipes and thresholds to reduce false rejects while maintaining required quality standards.

Requirements

  • Education & Experience:

    • Required: High School Diploma or GED equivalent.
    • Required: 3–5 years of specialized experience maintaining instrumentation and electronic controls in a high-speed manufacturing or continuous process environment.
  • Technical Skills:

    • Proficient in reading electrical schematics, P&IDs, and ladder logic.
    • Experience with Allen-Bradley PLC hardware.
  • Tools:

    • Demonstrated ability to use precision electrical test equipment and hand tools.
  • Software/Computer Skills & Experience:

    • Intermediate level of knowledge in basic hardware and software using of a variety of different computer operating systems such as Microsoft Office Work, Excel, OneNote, PowerPoint, Visio, Google Workspace, Outlook/Gmail and web-site software required.
    • Has the ability to learn new software systems and data management systems quickly.
    • Proficient keyboarding and typing skills.

General Skills & Experience

  • Understanding manufacturing processes.

  • Prefer data collection and analysis experience in a high-volume automated manufacturing environment.

  • Understanding engineering, scientific and other technical information.

  • Experience of New Product Introduction, reworking design changes and upgrades through to production.

  • Ability to understand and interpret technical manuals, 2D drawings, P&IDs, fluid and electrical schematics and other engineering documentation.

  • Proven understanding of BOMs, manufacturability, process design, process validation, assembly methods, design reviews and cost reduction methodologies.

  • Innovative leader with the ability to identify opportunities and influence organizations to gain support and overcome resistance with data and persuasion.

  • Ability to develop manufacturing documentation.

  • Capable of identifying critical process parameters and applying statistics to process measurement and control.

  • Development and qualification of tooling/equipment skills.

  • Strong organizational skills and proven ability to maintain accurate, detailed records that will be audited periodically.

  • Excellent communication and negotiation skills for relaying data (verbally and in-writing) between other employees and clients.

  • Ability to work on multiple projects at once with tight deadlines.

  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills.

  • Must be able to identify and execute improvement opportunities through both process improvements and system improvements.

  • Ability to take ownership and responsibility with little direction.

  • Ability to be pragmatic in decision making; requires high integrity.

  • Ability to effectively train people inside and outside their work group.

Environmental & Physical Factors

  • Works primarily in a warehouse/manufacturing facility.
  • Daily contact with other departmental personnel.
  • Occasionally works in all weather conditions, extreme temperatures, around chemicals and chemical fumes/emissions, dusty & clean environments.
  • Frequent sitting, standing, walking and occasional bending.
  • Will lift, carry, pull / push, and reach for supplies and on occasion lifting (up to 50 lbs.) while performing various aspects of the job.
  • Will need to climb stairs, climb ladders, lift and move objects, requires manual dexterity and repetitive use of keyboard/computer devices/power tools/machining equipment;
  • Wear safety equipment, such as earplugs, goggles, and steel-toed shoes.

Hours / Special Conditions

  • This position is 12 hour rotating shifts 4 days on and 4 days off; Rotating shifts requires working night shifts;
  • Present to fulfill job duties & meet operational demands/support;
  • Schedule may vary depending on plant operational needs thus flexibility is required which may include long days, evenings, weekends, holidays and overtime;
  • Regular and predictable attendance is an essential function of this position.
