About the Role
As a lead designer, you will supervise and provide technical direction to a team of designers, ensuring the total delivery of electrical and instrumentation deliverables and services on time, within budget, and meeting quality expectations. This role involves advanced design work, serving as a technical specialist for complex assignments, and requires extensive progressive experience in electrical and instrumentation design. You will work under minimal supervision and utilize project controls for cost, schedule, and quality.
Responsibilities
- Utilize department design and drafting standards.
- Recognize and communicate project scope, specifications, and design criteria.
- Identify and communicate scope and design changes promptly.
- Provide on-site assistance during startup.
- Offer technical guidance to less experienced drafting personnel.
- Coordinate work activities with other staff members and the discipline lead.
- Report the current status of project work, including delays or improvements in the projected finish date.
- Confer with clients to determine scopes of work and address technical matters.
- Direct designers to complete tasks efficiently.
- Produce equipment specifications (480VAC, 15kV/5kV) and electrical installation specifications with engineering review and approval.
- Lead and coordinate design staff to achieve scope, schedule, and budget objectives.
- Mentor subordinates and participate in team or cross-discipline checks.
- Verify calculations made by other designers for accuracy and conformance to codes and specifications.
- Determine construction quantities and provide construction cost estimates.
- Delegate work proportionate to designers' skills and experience, ensuring efficient progress and quality.
- Consult with design leaders from other disciplines to ensure coordination.
- Participate in planning training programs and professional development for staff.
- Identify possible changes in scope and draft change orders.
- Develop design criteria and scope of work for projects.
- Forecast hours to complete professional services and develop staffing plans.
- Identify required information and proactively obtain it.
- Coordinate with other disciplines regarding design development and changes.
- Apply company engineering design and CAD drafting standards.
- Lead small teams to deliver on commitments and coordinate with process groups for efficient layouts.
- Deliver presentations of Hargrove Engineers & Constructors services.
Requirements
- Associate degree in Engineering Technology or Computer-Aided Drafting (required).
- 25 or more years of relevant industrial experience in electrical and instrumentation drafting and design.
- Familiarity with the current version of the National Electrical Code (NEC).
- Ability to perform lighting level calculations, size wire, conduit, and overcurrent protection for lighting and power applications.
- Proficiency in voltage drop calculations, conduit and cable tray routing, and calculating tray and conduit fill.
- Ability to determine motor control center and load center unit substation loading.
- Familiarity with specifications and installation details of construction bulk materials and equipment.
- Ability to create accurate electrical installation documents from vendor equipment drawings.
- Knowledge of 15kV power system equipment and installation techniques (above and below ground).
- Ability to develop equipment specifications for 480VAC and 15kV/5kV equipment (e.g., switchgear, motor control centers, load break switches).
- Capability to perform calculations for short circuit and overcurrent protective device ratings.
- Ability to develop electrical installation specifications, construction cost estimates, and detailed engineering schedules.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, 2D AutoCAD, and Microstation (3D AutoCAD desirable).
- Programming experience with PLC, HMI, and/or DCS equipment.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Highly developed virtual team skills and cross-divisional relationships.
- Ability to provide interoffice execution support with no supervision.
