About the role

The Weapon Verification and Validation Division (V-Division) ensures weapon designs meet all requirements and perform as intended. V-Division verifies design compliance and validates performance through investigations, qualification tests, and evaluations. This mission is carried out through close communication and collaboration with sister divisions within the Weapons Engineering Directorate (ALDW).

Responsibilities

  • Supports Integrated Weapon Experiments, focusing on weapon hydrodynamic tests and subcritical experiments.
  • Works with the Lead Test Engineer and Lead Physicist to design, develop, and deliver experimental devices for each test.
  • Collaborates with more than a dozen groups across the laboratory to manage requirements, perform concept modeling, and integrate components.
  • Executes pre-test and post-test activities, generating project reports and analysis.
  • Prepares and presents technical reports, plans, and briefings for both internal and external stakeholders.
  • Mentors junior staff and grows leadership skills.

Requirements

  • Basic knowledge of professional engineering concepts, principles, practices, and procedures.
  • Demonstrated through experience researching, designing, testing, analyzing, verifying, and validating engineering solutions.
  • Good communication skills with individuals from diverse technical backgrounds.
  • Problem-solving complex and technical issues.
  • Initiate and sustain activities to meet deliverables.
  • Plan and lead meetings to achieve intended goals and track action items.
  • Handle classified matter and follow security and safety policy and procedures.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in Engineering from an accredited institution and 4 years of related experience.
  • Master's Degree in Engineering from an accredited institution and 6 years of related experience.
  • Active DOE Q clearance.
  • Formal systems engineering training, certification, or education (e.g. INCOSE ASEP).
  • Knowledge of and demonstrated experience with nuclear weapon design, development, qualification, certification, assembly/production, or surveillance.
  • Experience working with LANL Weapons Engineering and Weapons Physics organizations.
  • Experience with tooling design and formal model-based system engineering (MBSE) training or certification.
  • Experience with requirements development and maintenance.
  • Experience with hydrodynamic testing.
  • Experience with ASME Y14.5 Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerance.
  • Experience with design for manufacturing principles.
  • Experience with performing safety structural analysis.
  • Experience working with or around high explosives.
