About the role

The Connecticut Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services (DMHAS) is seeking a full-time (37.5 hours/week) HVAC Technician at the CT Mental Health Center (CMHC) in New Haven.

Responsibilities

  • Performs highly skilled HVACR work in accordance with trade practices and codes on heating, ventilation, cooling, and refrigeration systems
  • Operates, maintains, installs, and repairs complex HVACR systems, including equipment using Freon, chilled water, and advanced air-handling components
  • Maintains and troubleshoots computerized control systems, ensuring proper airflow, pressurization, and system performance
  • Independently plans and executes work, including estimating materials, determining cooling requirements, and completing technical tasks with minimal supervision
  • Interprets technical data such as psychrometric charts and performs diagnostic tasks including minor fuel tests, gas leak checks, and water treatment adjustments

Requirements

  • Four (4) years of experience in tasks in the heating, ventilation, air conditioning and refrigeration trade
  • Two (2) years of the General Experience must have been performing skilled heating, ventilation, air conditioning and refrigeration trades
  • Graduation from a vocational or technical school with a diploma designating completion of subject requirements in a maintenance trade area may be substituted for two (2) years of the General Experience
  • At the University of Connecticut: Satisfactory performance and completion of the UConn Facilities Internship Training Program may be substituted for the General and Special Experience as determined by UConn Facilities Operations and Human Resources Management
  • At other state agencies: Two (2) years of experience as a Qualified Craft Worker Trainee in a designated maintenance trade area may be substituted for the General and Special Experience
  • Experience performing technical duties within the HVACR trade area on a military base, aircraft carrier or large compound may be substituted for the General and Special Experience on a year for year basis
  • Requires a HVAC license (D2, S2)

Qualifications

  • Considerable knowledge of and ability to apply standard tools, materials, methods and standard HVACR trade practices
  • Skills: interpersonal skills, oral and written communication skills
  • Ability to prepare estimates and keep shop records, utilize computer software

Pay

$63,918* - $82,180/year (New state employees start at the minimum)

Schedule

  • First shift: 7:30 AM - 3:30 PM
  • Full-time, 37.5 hours per week
