HVAC Technician

Are you an HVAC Professional looking for an exciting career featuring hands-on work? Our Facilities Management (FM) team at CU Boulder is hiring an HVAC Technician. This role focuses on the installation, repair, maintenance, modification, and operation of the campus’s heating, ventilating, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems and building automation systems (BAS) in academic buildings. Most campus HVAC systems are controlled and monitored by a computerized BAS network.

Responsibilities

• HVAC System and ULTF Inventory Maintenance and Monitoring
  • Perform journey-level analysis and repair of HVAC systems and associated equipment, including:
    • Air handling units, VAV systems, VAV with reheats, dual duct systems, constant volume with reheats
    • Labs with variable fume hood control
    • Constant and variable flow heating and chilled water systems, Delta P valves, steam systems
    • Chillers, flat plate cooling, cooling towers, boilers (steam and hot water), and process cooling water systems
  • Perform new installations, maintenance, and troubleshooting for the ULTF monitoring program on campus, including bi-annual preventive maintenance (PM) on the ULTF inventory (condenser cleaning, battery replacement, filter replacement, and troubleshooting door issues).
  • Assist during emergencies to locate dry ice and backup freezer options for customers.
  • Ensure the ULTF monitoring system communicates without deficiencies and perform troubleshooting as required.
  • Verify and update contact information with the research community, including regular communication with lab Principal Investigators (PIs) to maintain the Master Customer Contact internal document and the Thermo Scientific website.
  • Review analytics regarding monitoring system performance to identify patterns and determine root causes of issues.
  • Keep customers updated and informed of potential issues.
• HVAC System Calibration and Commissioning
  • Commission, calibrate, and test all temperature control components within a building’s temperature control system to maintain optimal performance and energy savings on a defined cycle.
  • May function as the lead for Facilities Management when commissioning and calibrating new work installed by contractors.
• Building Automation Systems/Direct Digital Controls
  • Install, troubleshoot, and repair all field devices of the direct digital control (DDC) systems within a building, including microprocessor-based controllers, wireless controllers, signal conditioners, relays, sensors, thermostats, and related wiring.
  • Modify numeric values, understand basic system programming code and alarm criteria, and maintain a clear understanding of the BAS within a building.
• Refrigeration/Chiller Maintenance and Operation
  • Maintain, repair, and operate chillers, split systems, cold rooms, computer room air conditioners, and related components and systems.
  • Understand operational and control sequences, follow troubleshooting procedures, and read related drawings and specifications.
  • Responsible for the recovery/reclamation of refrigerants and oils per EPA regulations and file accurate paperwork for tracking refrigerants.
• Project Support
  • Support projects, including small remodels, renewal and replacement projects, large capital projects, and similar initiatives.
  • Review project documents (drawings, specifications, component submittals, and requests for information), outage notification requests, and perform outages related to projects.
  • Conduct quality assurance inspections, attend project walks, perform equipment startups, and final commissioning of new projects.
  • Close out work orders, schedule work for the following day, and ensure repair work orders are created.
  • Complete material issues requests and purchase requests to procure needed materials.
• Safety and Essential Services
  • Actively participate in and complete safety meetings, follow safety policies and procedures, and adhere to Standard Operating Procedures for assignments and equipment use.
  • Report potential safety hazards, mistakes, accidents, or procedural violations to a supervisor in a timely manner.
  • As an essential services employee, respond to other duties as assigned, including during campus emergencies (e.g., snow, wind, rain, flood, or other natural/man-made events).

Schedule

This is a full-time, in-person position with a work schedule of Monday through Friday, 7:30 AM to 4:30 PM. Weekend, alternate, or extended shifts may be required based on department needs.

Pay

The annual salary for this position is $73,130. If you have prior state-classified experience in the same class series, your pay may be set at a higher amount per the state Step Pay Program implemented on July 1, 2024.

Requirements

• Must be a Colorado resident with a valid Colorado driver’s license.
• 3 years of experience in HVAC and mechanical trades work, including experience with refrigeration technology. Appropriate education or successful completion of a formalized apprenticeship program may substitute for the required experience on a year-for-year basis.

Preferred Qualifications

• Universal EPA Refrigerant Certification
• Knowledge of building automation systems and direct digital controls
