HVAC Technician

About the role

Tessera is seeking an HVAC Technician to join our team at the Department of Energy in Oak Ridge, Tennessee. This position offers a competitive compensation package including medical, dental, vision, and 401(k) retirement plans, along with other benefits.

Responsibilities

• Connect motors, compressors, temperature controls, humidity controls, and circulating ventilation fans to control panels and connect control panels to the power source.
• Install air and water filters in the completed installation, inject small amounts of refrigerant into the compressor to test systems, and add Freon gas to build up the prescribed operating pressure.
• Observe pressure and vacuum gauges and adjust controls to ensure proper operation, test joints and connections for gas leaks, and wrap pipes in insulation batting and secure them in place with cement or wire bands.
• Replace defective breaker controls, thermostats, switches, fuses, and electrical wiring to repair installed units, may install, repair, and service air conditioners ranging from fifteen to twenty tons cooling capacity in warehouses and small factory buildings.
• Install and clean air and water filters.
• Install and program thermostats.
• Fabricate, assemble, and install ductwork and chassis parts.
• Communicate and interact directly with customers, inform them of unexpected or additional repairs, and determine customer needs.
• Respond to customer inquiries and complaints.
• Ensure completed work meets quality control standards.
• Make difficult diagnoses and suggest solutions and repairs to customers.
• Communicate with the scheduler to update the status of repairs and estimate completion dates.

Qualifications

• A minimum of three (3) years of HVAC experience.
• An associate’s degree preferred.
• Must be able to obtain and maintain an HVAC and/or EPA certification.
• Journeyman certification preferred.
• Must be able to obtain and maintain an “L” level security clearance with the Department of Energy.

• Must be able to lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
• May be required to reach, kneel, walk, stand, and use repetitive motion for several hours at a time based on position duties.
• Standing or sitting for several hours at a time, climbing in and out of a vehicle, and up and down stairs may also be required.
• Must have the perseverance to work effectively under pressure for extended periods of time.

Requirements

• A valid state driver’s license is required with the ability to obtain and maintain coverage by Tessera’s insurance.
• Access to a federal military installation requires a REAL ID-compliant driver's license or an acceptable alternative, such as a U.S. passport or military ID, in accordance with the REAL ID Act.

Pay

$35.22 - $35.22 per hour.
