About the role

The Heating, Ventilation & Air Conditioning (HVAC) Technician is responsible for setting up, maintaining, and troubleshooting industrial and residential HVAC equipment, including chillers, light commercial units (package, DX, split), and residential units (split, mini-split, window). The role requires theoretical knowledge of air conditioning and chilled water production, as well as practical mechanical and electrical skills. Technicians handle refrigerant and Freon gas, necessitating proper certification and experience to mitigate environmental risks.

Responsibilities

  • Coordinates with assigned HVAC Senior and/or other trades to complete projects and work orders efficiently.
  • Diagnoses causes of problems and/or failures in heating/air conditioning systems to identify repair or replacement needs.
  • Fabricates equipment parts to meet specialty needs or replace unavailable components.
  • Informs personnel about procedures and/or work order status to support decision-making and compliance with building and safety regulations.
  • Inspects HVAC systems and components (e.g., heating units, building exhaust fans, ventilation units) to evaluate condition, identify necessary repairs, and recommend preventive maintenance.
  • Installs heating and air conditioning equipment and systems to provide enhanced or upgraded capabilities.
  • Maintains vehicles, tools, and equipment to ensure safe operating conditions.
  • Participates in meetings, workshops, training, and seminars as assigned to convey or gather job-related information.
  • Performs routine and preventive maintenance to ensure ongoing HVAC system function.
  • Prepares written materials (e.g., repair status, activity logs) to document activities and convey information.
  • Repairs heating and air conditioning systems and/or components (e.g., pumps, motors, air handlers, fan coils, piping) to maintain a comfortable environment.
  • Requests equipment and supplies to maintain inventory and ensure availability for installation and repair tasks.
  • Responds to emergency situations during or after hours to resolve immediate safety concerns.
  • Transports tools, equipment, and supplies to ensure materials are available at job sites.
  • Performs other duties as assigned, which may include corrective and preventive maintenance on all facilities.

Qualifications

  • Requires a high school diploma and vocational training or equivalent.
  • Minimum 4+ years of progressive experience on multiple types of HVAC systems.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license.
  • EPA 608 Universal certification preferred.
  • Working conditions include being on feet for the majority of the shift, working with arms overhead (bending, stooping, reaching), and lifting up to 60 pounds. Some ladder use may be required.
