HVAC TECHNICIAN

About the role

The position involves performing skilled and semi-skilled work in the installation, maintenance, and repair of HVAC systems and equipment in the City of Columbia. Other tasks include troubleshooting and repairing electrical and plumbing systems and equipment, performing general carpentry and minor building construction and renovation work, and performing related work as required.

Responsibilities

• Diagnose HVAC malfunctions, perform HVAC preventive maintenance, repairs, and replacements.
• Inspect work in progress and after completion to ensure compliance with applicable codes, specifications, standards, and schedules.
• Operate and maintain a variety of equipment, such as vehicle, HVAC equipment, ice machines, computer controls, hand tools, diagnostic tools, refrigerant recovery systems, etc.
• Install, maintain, and repair electrical components and equipment, including but not limited to general electrical wiring, electrical outlets, switches, breakers, light fixtures, ballasts, circuits, security lights, ground lights, etc.
• Troubleshoot and diagnose routine equipment and system problems; schedule and perform routine repair work or parts replacement.
• Maintain assigned tools and equipment; maintain accurate records on maintenance/repair work completed.
• Perform all work in accordance with all applicable policies, procedures, regulations, and standards of safety and quality; ensure the timely completion of all assignments; and perform other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED
• Four (4) years of relevant prior experience
• Valid South Carolina Class “D” Driver’s License
• EPA certification (preferred)

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

• Knowledge of basic algebra involving variables and formulas and/or basic geometry involving plane and solid figures, circumferences, areas and volumes
• Ability to compute or perform arithmetic operations using data or information
• Ability to speak or signal to people to convey or exchange information of a general nature
• Ability to lead, operate, or repair complex machinery or equipment that requires extended training and experience, such as HVAC equipment, electronic equipment, heavy shop equipment; may involve installation and testing
• Ability to read technical instructions, procedures, manuals, and charts to solve practical problems
• Ability to compose routine reports and specialized reports, forms, and business letters with proper format
• Ability to perform clerical, manual, or technical tasks requiring a wide range of procedures and requiring intensive understanding of a restricted field or complete familiarity with the functions of a unit or small division of an operating agency
