About the role

A Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning (HVAC) Instructor is responsible for providing technical and practical instruction to students on the installation, maintenance, and repair of environmental control systems. This role requires the instructor to develop and deliver a hands-on curriculum that covers electrical components, refrigerant handling, thermodynamics, and system diagnostics, all while adhering to local building codes and EPA regulations. The teacher must manage a safe and well-equipped lab, prepare students for industry certifications, and liaise with local businesses to ensure the program's content meets current workforce demands, ultimately guiding students toward successful employment as HVAC technicians.

Responsibilities

  • Plan and implement engaging lessons that align with district, state, and national curriculum standards.
  • Teach skills and knowledge pertaining to all HVAC systems using diverse instructional methods.
  • Integrate technology and hands-on activities to enhance student learning and engagement.
  • Audit student progress through formative and summative assessments and adjust instruction accordingly.
  • Create a welcoming and engaging physical space that supports and celebrates learning and fosters a sense of pride.
  • Supervise students in activities occurring outside the classroom during the school day, including activities on and off campus, and those involving school transportation.
  • Identify and address the academic, social, and emotional needs of individuals.
  • Provide additional support and accommodations for students with special needs or English Language Learners (ELL).
  • Foster students' social-emotional development by teaching collaboration, empathy, and problem-solving skills.
  • Collaborate with other teachers, administrators, and support staff to foster a supportive school community.
  • Collaborate with specialists, counselors, and families to support student success.
  • Maintain open and effective communication with students, parents, and colleagues.
  • Provide regular updates on student progress through conferences, progress reports, report cards, and other parent or guardian contact methods.
  • Organize and maintain a system for accurate and complete record-keeping, grading, and reporting for all student activities, including achievement, behavior, and attendance, as required by district procedures and applicable laws.
  • Comply with all district policies and administrative directives.
  • Maintain confidentiality of sensitive student information.
  • Participate in professional development opportunities and faculty meetings.
  • Apply new learning and skills acquired through professional development that aligns with the District CSIP and building goals.
  • Engage in self-evaluation with regard to performance and professional growth.
  • Engage in after-school responsibilities, including parent-teacher conferences, student events, and professional development sessions.

Qualifications

  • Meet DESE minimum requirements for alternative career education certification.
  • Verification of one of the following:
    • Possession of a baccalaureate or higher degree from an accredited college or university in the subject area being taught and four thousand (4,000) hours of DESE-approved, related occupational experience obtained within the most recent ten (10) years;
    • Possession of an associate's degree from an accredited college or university in the subject area being taught and five thousand (5,000) hours of DESE-approved, related occupational experience obtained within the most recent ten (10) years;
    • Six thousand (6,000) hours of DESE-approved, related occupational experience obtained within the most recent ten (10) years.

Skills

  • In human relations, leadership, and conflict management.
  • Creativity, flexibility, and a passion for teaching and learning.
  • Experience working with high school students or adult learners preferred.

Essential Duties And Responsibilities

  • Develop and maintain a set of expectations and processes that ensure students are exposed to entry-level positions within the industry.
  • Demonstrate the proper use of all HVAC system tools, equipment, and materials.
  • Instruct students in the proper use of eye protection, care and proper operation of tools, machines and equipment.
  • Explain the interrelationships and the opportunities for careers in HVAC and other related areas.
  • Exhibit behavior that indicates an attitude of respect for customers, coworkers, and fellow citizens.
  • Develop strong relationships with the local HVAC community and provide avenues for partnerships where applicable.
  • Develop strategies to recruit and attract students to the program to ensure its long-term success.

Knowledge And Skill Abilities

  • Language Ability: Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of students.
  • Math Ability: Basic math skills required.
  • Reasoning Ability: Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written or oral form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
  • Computer and Equipment Skills: To perform this job successfully, an individual should have knowledge and experience with word processing and spreadsheet software. Additionally, individuals will utilize standard office equipment, including photocopiers and telephone systems.
  • Personnel Management: Skilled at developing, motivating, and directing people as they work.

Physical Requirements/Environmental Factors

  • Ability to work in a climate-controlled building, as well as in inclement weather.
  • Ability to stand, walk, and move around for long periods of time.
  • Ability to see and read, with or without vision aids, a computer screen and printed matter, and to distinguish colors.
  • Sufficient hearing to understand speech at normal room levels, and to hear and understand speech on the telephone.
  • Manual dexterity to operate a telephone and enter data into a computer using both hands.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and efficiently with sufficient volume to be heard in normal conversation, on the telephone, and when addressing groups.
  • Ability to exert up to 30 pounds of force to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects.
  • Ability to lift, bend, stoop, pull, grasp, and carry a variety of objects of different shapes and sizes.
  • Ability to climb and work from ladders, stepladders, step stools, and under vehicles to supervise or perform vehicle repairs.
  • Ability to demonstrate proper procedures associated with equipment and provide adequate supervision of students.

This position's performance will be evaluated per the provisions of the Board's policy.
