HVAC Senior Controls Technician

About the role

Under minimal supervision, conduct preventive maintenance, repair, installation, commissioning, and general servicing of systems (including detailed troubleshooting). Responsible for high levels of customer satisfaction through direct, on-site customer interface. Mentor control technicians, service technicians, and mechanical technicians on building automation activities. Provide customers with solutions to solve building inefficiencies and resolve service-related items as a trusted advisor.

Responsibilities

• Diagnose and repair complex control systems malfunctions requiring extensive knowledge of electronic or digital controls systems and ability to test and write modifications in multiple languages of systems software.
• Consult with customers through data gathered and site assessments; provide field proposals for retrofits, upgrades, or enhancements to existing equipment.
• Assist sales by providing technical recommendations for sales leads.
• Manage assigned work to meet professional and efficient execution of time and customer satisfaction.
• Interface with branch manager, service manager, service project manager, or subcontractors on projects to coordinate activities ethically and professionally.
• Provide sketches of field changes and discrepancies for engineering corrections and drawings.
• Install and modify software and graphics; communicate with customers upon arrival and before leaving the work site.
• Meet regularly with customers to become familiar with operating problems; keep customers informed on service provided, outstanding issues, and recommend system enhancements, upgrades, or replacement.
• Promote the sale of add-on work; adhere to all Johnson Controls and customer safety standards.
• Provide safety leadership and instruction to all control technicians in the branch; ensure safety awareness while working onsite with subcontractors.
• Train customers in control systems operations; deliver manuals and documentation for training needs.
• Mentor Controls Technicians and Service Technicians on complex building automation systems; coach and train the technical workforce on non-complex, non-critical equipment.
• Compile job documentation such as certificates of completion, customer training forms, training certificates, and punch lists.
• Conduct self-study to improve and maintain technical proficiency in company’s product lines; complete certifications as required.
• Assist in the design and configuration of building control systems as defined by contract documents; create flow diagrams, sequence of operations, bill of material, network layouts, and electrical schematics.
• Assist in developing and testing software programs necessary to operate the system per project requirements.
• Compile and/or complete project as-built and close-out documentation.
• Assist in coordination and creation of necessary drawings and equipment schedules for submittals and installation.
• Select, order, and track delivery of materials for assigned projects.
• Assist in loading and commissioning of all system and network-level controllers; validate complete system functionality and troubleshoot problems with subcontractors and other trades.
• Provide field change information to the project team for creation of as-built drawings and software.
• Keep management and contractors/customers informed of job progress and issues.
• Assist in performing site-specific training for owner/operator on the total building control system; participate in release meetings with the project field team.
• Provide recommendations and solutions to ensure facilities run efficiently, including upselling opportunities; provide quotes to support recommendations.

Requirements

• 5 years of commercial controls troubleshooting experience in the HVAC industry, including buildings, chiller plants, and systems.
• Vocational school program graduate or associate’s degree in a technical field, or two years’ experience in servicing electronic and/or mechanical systems.
• Demonstrated ability to install and/or service electronic control systems and HVAC equipment.
• Effective communication skills to represent Johnson Controls on customer sites; ability to explain technical information to technical and non-technical people.
• Demonstrated effective writing skills and understanding of programs and software applications.
• Knowledge of control theory, automatic temperature controls, building automation systems, and other building subsystems.

Pay

Hiring hourly range: $28.70–$39.38. Hourly rate determined by education, experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities of the applicant, internal equity, and alignment with market data.
