About the Role

Incumbents install, maintain, and repair heating, ventilating, air conditioning, and refrigeration (HVAC/R) equipment, including related fixtures and systems such as hot water, steam, and direct digital control (DDC) systems across various buildings, including academic facilities, residence halls, and laboratories.

Responsibilities

  • Install, maintain, and repair HVAC/R equipment and related systems.
  • Perform preventative maintenance on heating, ventilation, refrigeration, and air conditioning systems.
  • Lubricate machinery and equipment according to standard procedures.
  • Use small hand and power tools safely and effectively.
  • Apply safety practices and procedures for installation, maintenance, and repair of HVAC/R and related electrical systems.
  • Interpret terminology, coding symbols, and standard abbreviations used in HVAC/R work.
  • Thread and solder pipes as required.
  • Operate and maintain equipment and materials used in HVAC/R, steam, and related electrical systems.
  • Use electrical testing equipment, such as voltmeters and amp probes.
  • Operate HVAC/R machinery and related equipment.
  • Work with electrical, electronic (DDC), and pneumatic HVAC control systems.
  • Comply with laws, regulations, and codes governing the safe and environmentally correct operation and repair of building systems.
  • Read and interpret specifications, operation manuals, blueprints, and other technical documents.
  • Follow oral and written instructions accurately.
  • Operate air and hydraulic lifts.
  • Work with a variety of low-voltage systems, including HVAC controls.
  • Operate Energy Management Systems.

Requirements

  • At least one year of full-time (or equivalent part-time) technical experience in the installation, maintenance, and repair of HVAC/R systems.
  • An equivalent combination of experience and a certificate or diploma from a recognized institution above the high school level, evidencing completion of a two-year program in refrigeration and heating (education may be prorated based on proportion completed).
  • Mechanical aptitude and dexterity.
  • Basic computer skills.
  • Current and valid driver’s license.
  • EPA Reclaim License.
  • Demonstrated willingness to be on the essential personnel list for facility-related emergencies and university closings due to weather or other emergencies.

Preferred Qualifications

  • MA Refrigeration Technician License.
  • Three years of experience installing, servicing, or inspecting HVAC systems, steam systems, and electrical components of HVAC equipment.
  • Experience in a similar institution.
  • Knowledge of a variety of low-voltage systems, such as HVAC controls.

Pay

HVAC II Grade 18 – Step 1: $2,488.76/biweekly – Step 14: $3,523.12/biweekly
