About the role
Provide service and maintenance for all aspects of mechanical operations and heating, ventilating, and air-conditioning (HVAC) and refrigeration equipment (especially large commercial and specialty systems) so as to support the University's educational mission.
Responsibilities
- Perform work in accordance with the International Mechanical Code (IMC)
- Apply knowledge of basic chemistry, electrical basics, control systems, steam and water heating fundamentals, and HVAC & refrigeration cycles and principles
- Use welding and/or soldering skills, tools, meters, gauges, and equipment correctly and safely
- Read, understand, and troubleshoot schematic diagrams
- Troubleshoot and repair problems of varied types in HVAC and refrigeration systems
- Follow procedures for safe refrigerant and chemical handling
- Adhere to OSHA regulations pertaining to work performed
- Operate and maintain HVAC and associated systems employing computer-based monitoring and control devices
Requirements

- Refrigerant Handling Certification (Universal preferred) upon hire
- Journeyman Mechanical License upon hire
- Valid Virginia driver's license and meets the standards for the University's insurance carrier upon hire
Qualifications
- High School Diploma or GED required
- Technical training in mechanical work (typically 3 years of Technical Trade School) required
- 4-7 years' progressively responsible mechanical experience directly related to HVAC systems, including commercial HVAC service of chillers and refrigeration
Schedule
Full-time, non-exempt position. Monday - Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.; 8 hours a day; 40 hours per week. Flexibility required. All Facilities employees are designated as essential personnel and may be required to work outside the normal work schedule on an emergency basis or planned overtime as directed by the immediate supervisor.
Pay
Pay Grade 6 (Hiring Range $22.67 to $33.73 per hour).
