HVAC Mechanic, Engineer, or Sr. Engineer
Job Title
Rhodes College is hiring two positions for Physical Plant, which may be filled at any of the following levels, based on the selected candidates’ experience and qualifications: HVAC Mechanic, HVAC Engineer, Sr. HVAC Engineer.
About the Role
To be considered for an opportunity, applicants must meet the job requirements for one of the three positions listed. A complete application includes a cover letter, a resume, and the names of three references.
Shift
Shift: Tuesday thru Saturday, 7:30am - 4:30pm. The shift will change in July for 6 months to Tuesday thru Saturday, 2:30pm - 11:30pm and will rotate every six months.
Job Title: HVAC Mechanic
Job Summary
The HVAC Mechanic performs skilled duties including the operation, installation, maintenance, and repair of air conditioning, heating, refrigeration, ventilation, and control equipment.
Responsibilities
- Repairs, replaces, sets up, calibrates, and operates control equipment to ensure efficient operation of equipment.
- Troubleshoots and performs preventive maintenance on equipment and systems assigned to a/c, heating, and ventilation, plumbing and electrical.
- Performs inspections of all A/c and heating equipment and systems, including water lines, valves, drives, belts, steam traps, expansion tanks, etc.
- Operates and assists in maintenance of electrical/pneumatic control systems.
- Cleans and maintains wall heaters, residential furnaces; replaces air filters.
- Monitors inventory and reorders parts and supplies as required.
- Responds to emergencies during evening and nighttime hours.
Requirements
- High school degree or GED equivalency, preferred.
- Three (3) years of work experience in A/C and heating field required.
- Universal Refrigerant recovery certificate required.
- First-class steam or first-class refrigeration license for Memphis/Shelby County preferred.
- Must pass pre-employment physical and drug screen.
- A valid driver’s license, required.
- Must possess excellent customer service skills utilizing strong analytical skills, excellent communication, interpersonal and administrative skills, and be detail-oriented.
- Ability to safely operate a motor vehicle, required.
- Ability to see sufficiently to perform the essential functions of the job.
- Ability to work from a ladder.
Job Title: HVAC Engineer
Job Summary
The HVAC Engineer is responsible for performing skilled duties including the operation, installation, maintenance, and repair of air conditioning, heating, refrigeration, ventilation, and control equipment.
Responsibilities
- Performs operation, maintenance, installation, and repair of A/C, heating, and refrigeration equipment.
- Analyzes and maintains chemical treatments for water in cooling towers and boiler systems.
- Installs, repairs, and services motors, pumps, and fans.
- Repairs, replaces, sets up, calibrates, and operates control equipment to ensure efficient operation of equipment.
- Repairs, replaces, sets up, calibrates, and operates control equipment to ensure efficient operation of equipment.
- Troubleshoots and corrects malfunctions on mechanical and electrical equipment.
- Performs preventive maintenance on equipment and systems assigned to A/C and heating.

Job Summary
The Sr. Engineer performs skilled duties including the operation, installation, maintenance, and repair of air conditioning, heating, refrigeration, ventilation, and control equipment.
Responsibilities
- Analyzes and maintains chemical treatments for water in cooling towers and boiler systems.
- Cleans and maintains wall heaters, residential furnaces; replaces air filters.
- Installs, repairs, and replaces various sized compressors.
- Installs, repairs, and services motors, pumps, and fans.
- Monitors inventory and reorders parts and supplies as required.
- Operates and assists in maintenance of electrical/pneumatic control systems.
- Performs inspections of all A/C and heating equipment and systems, including water lines, valves, drives, belts, steam traps, expansion tanks, etc.

Physical Demands
- Ability to lift and carry forty (40) pounds.
- Ability to lift fifty (50) pounds from floor to waist.
- Ability to lift forty (40) pounds from waist to shoulder and shoulder to overhead.
- Tolerance for sustained overhead and bending.
- Ability to work from ladders.
- Ability to carry equipment weighing up to twenty-five (25) pounds up a ladder.
- Repetitive use of various hand tools.
- May be exposed to chemical, mechanical or electrical hazards.
